Europe said "screw you" to Russian energy, so Moscow pivoted. India now gets a third of its hydrocarbons from Russia, and Russia-China trade has exploded to $245 billion. Even cutting Russia out of the SWIFT banking system failed. They just created their own system (SPFS), which now has 160 global participants, and are working with China to build a massive alternative to Western finance. The sanctions didn't break Russia — they just forced them to build a new system without the West.

“I think the world must realize that China will not converge with Western norms, and it will find its own path to modernity,” Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in a recent interview with the Financial Times, noting that China is a technological leader in many areas, in advanced manufacturing, in renewable energy, and the world has to contend with and accept the reality that China is not just a rising power, it is a risen power. China recently decided to forgo its special and differential treatment provisions in the WTO. In just this past year or so, it has doubled down on its support for global institutions. These are examples of how we have to embrace the reality that China will be a key player, and potentially a key leader, in this new global system, said Wong.
