🇨🇳 Elon Musk gets it right About China: “The Chinese people simply view China’s ascendancy as resuming its normal place in history, the most powerful country on Earth.” The man builds things for a living, so he deals in engineering realities. He has also said that China has the deepest pool of innovative talent in human history, past and present, and that its space program is “far more advanced than most people realise.” Living here in China, I see exactly what he means and he was right. For most of recorded history China was the world’s leading civilisation: gunpowder, paper, the compass, printing, vast trade networks and advanced agriculture that fed populations Europe could not match. It sat at the centre of the global economy for centuries. Then came the brutal interruption. The Century of Humiliation: opium wars, unequal treaties, foreign powers carving up the country and a Japanese invasion that killed tens of millions. China was knocked back hard, exploited, fragmented and deliberately kept weak by powers that feared a strong unified nation. That was never going to be permanent. Under the CPC since 1949 and especially through reform and opening up, China has methodically rebuilt. Nearly 800 million people lifted out of poverty. The world’s most extensive high-speed rail network, the largest 5G infrastructure, the biggest manufacturing base on the planet and now a lead in EVs, batteries and high-tech supply chains, with AI and space pushing the frontier. This is not some sudden “rise” the way Western media frames it. It is restoration: civilisational continuity meeting modern execution at scale. The talent, discipline and long-term thinking are visible on the streets, where the infrastructure makes Western capitals look outdated and the momentum is structural, not temporary. Musk sees through the denial because he works with Chinese engineers and Chinese supply chains every day. The West loves to frame China as a new disruptor or a threat. Which is the wrong lens to view China through. This is history correcting course after a painful detour, and a confident China advancing its interests serves a multipolar world far better than containment ever will. How much longer until more people outside China accept what is already obvious on the ground here? It all started back then. The future is being built now, and not by the ones building tariff walls.

Breaking (the internet): CCP President Xi’s use of the term, “Thucydides Trap” during his opening comments to President Donald J. Trump has everyone wondering … WHAT THE …. ? Xi’s remark on the Thucydides trap is a classic piece of Chinese diplomatic signaling; polite on the surface, however, very sharp and pointed underneath. It’s a reminder to our president (and the world) that Beijing (Xi) sees itself as the rising power in a structural rivalry with a (supposedly) established hegemon (the U.S.), and that any failure to accommodate China’s ascent risks major conflict which the United States cannot afford (and there is practically zero support from the American people currently for more war and Xi knows it). Examining it another way, President Xi stated it intentionally to show China as Sparta (rising, dynamic, rightful heir to greater influence) and the U.S. as Athens (established but fearful and in decline). To some students of warfare, this may be an imperfect analogy, but the fact he used this phrase must be clearly and thoroughly examined. Xi is signaling that the U.S. should step back gracefully, especially on Taiwan (and never lose site of what Xi has already said about Taiwan; One (1) China, and he’s not backing down), checking trade & tech restrictions, and increasingly regional dominance, rather than the U.S. attempting to further impede China’s “rejuvenation” efforts. Essentially, it was a veiled warning: Push too hard (ie., on Taiwan or decoupling), and structural tensions could lead to an extremely dangerous place. Lastly, I believe Xi’s use of this ancient theory on warfare is explicitly tied to Taiwan tensions. At the same time, it’s cooperative language as well. Typical use of smart diplomatic double speak the Chinese are masters at. Xi addressing a new paradigm, a brighter future for humanity because he knows the world is watching and listening and studying. This is standard CCP diplomacy that keeps the door open for deals while putting the onus on the U.S. to avoid escalation. Bottom line, and like it or not, he let Trump know you’re in my house now and we set the rules here. FYI only, Thucydides wrote about the Peloponnesian War. The War (431–404 BC) was a devastating 27-year conflict between Athens and Sparta. It was driven by Sparta’s fears of growing Athenian (ie., U.S.) imperialism, the war ended with the total defeat of Athens, fundamentally altering the ancient Greek world and ending its “Golden Age.” The Peloponnesian war lasted more than two decades. I’d say we’re somewhere in the late third quarter and time favors the watchmakers and not the watch-watchers. We need to keep in mind that Donald J. Trump isn’t the only one who understands nor read the art of the deal.

I’m seeing a lot of questions on the launch of China’s Chang’e 6 mission yesterday to get samples - for the first time - from the far side of the moon. We don’t know (afaik) why specifically they’re doing that, but we have a pretty good idea what grand vision China is working towards with their space program. How? From this 2022 video by Chas Freeman (former Assistant Secretary of Defense and Nixon's interpreter during his era-defining 1972 China visit), who imho is undoubtedly one of the most knowledgeable former US officials on China. He says that according to his own discussions with people running China’s space program, they’re following the vision described in the book "The high frontier" by Gerard K. O'Neill, which Freeman says has "become the bible of the Chinese space program". I read the book. So what vision does it describe? The book was written in 1976 by O'Neill who was a professor of physics at Princeton University. He also founded the Space Studies Institute, an organization devoted to funding research into space manufacturing and colonization. In other words, he knew his stuff. The book makes the very fair point that we have massive resource constraints on earth, especially given the growing population. He estimated in 1976 that we should be "about six and a half billion people in the year 2000", and we were 6.114 billion back then so he was pretty prescient. He estimates that these constraints will progressively give rise to more and more social tensions as the growing earth population competes for our limited resources as well as faces global problems like climate change. In his view, dealing with this will either require "an authoritarian regime capable of mounting the immense task of social reorganization needed to escape catastrophe" or, alternatively, “mankind would [need to adopt] a static society [that would be] forced in self-defense to suppress new ideas". The 3rd alternative is of course the colonization of space. The most interesting aspect of the book is that he claims everything he writes is feasible with knowledge and technology that already existed in the late 70s. In short he calls for the establishment of large human habitats in the Earth-Moon system, located at stable Lagrange points ("parking spots" in space where gravity from different spatial bodies cancel each other out). In particular he developed the concept of what's known today as the "O'Neill cylinder" which he says "could support quite easily a population of ten million people, growing its food in agricultural cylinders near but outside the main habitat". Energy-wise, it'd simply make use of solar energy via a system of mirrors. As he describes it: "the concentration of the unvarying, intense sunlight of space by very lightweight, inexpensive mirrors can provide all the energy that industry will ever need [...] at a fraction of a cent per kilowatt-hour". He envisages building these habitats with material from the moon, shot into space via "mass drivers", a form of electromagnetic catapult. Also "the habitats would have artificial gravity similar as that of earth by rotating about twenty-eight times an hour”, but he also envisages low-gravity areas, especially for recreational activities such as swimming pools or dancing representations. To trade with earth, he develops the idea of beaming solar power back to earth via "microwave from solar power stations in orbit". As he describes it "the microwave beam would arrive at Earth with a beam width of about seven kilometers. Its intensity would be modest, less than half that of sunlight. In contrast to sunlight, though, it would be there all the time, even at night or in clouds or rain, and it would be in a form ready for conversion to DC current with a loss of only 10 percent. The areas receiving these beams’ output on Earth would be fenced, and outside the fence the intensity of microwave radiation would be no higher than outside a microwave oven with the door closed. He estimates that if "Satellite Solar Power Stations (SSPS) were to become the sole source of electric energy in the United States in the year 2000, the land area necessary for the SSPS antennas would still be only 0.2 percent of that of the continental United States". In short, the establishment of space colonies could lead to the fulfillment of a good share of Earth's energy needs. Last but not least he describes life in space habitats as better than that of earth, largely thanks to the level of control we'd have over the environment (total climate control which would enable an abundance of food and no natural disaster) as well as unlimited cheap energy. To conclude, Chas Freeman typically really knows his stuff when it comes to China and he’s very intellectually honest (a rare trait among US officials) so I have no doubt he tells the truth when he says the Chinese told him that was the vision. And China famously thinks very big and very long term so it would be quite like them to go for something like this. There are also quite a few tangible signs that China is working towards that vision. See for instance this November 2022 news where “China’s space station will join a project to collect solar power from space and send it to Earth in a high-energy microwave beam”: That’s exactly O’Neill’s vision! Or check this October 2022 news that says China is developing new "electromagnetic sledges" that can propel a carriage weighing a few tonnes to a record speed, with a key application for this being “aerospace”: Remember: O’Neill’s vision is to build his habitats with material from the moon, shot into space via "mass drivers", a form of electromagnetic catapult. So there you go… Or also the fact that the Chinese will build, together with the Russians, a moon base - planned for 2028 - powered by a “space nuclear reactor” that’s already been developed (on Earth) and has passed review by China’s Ministry of Science: The space nuclear reactor can generate 1MW of electricity, enough to power 10 International Space Stations. Enough power, maybe, to undertake mining activity and power an electromagnetic catapult… After visions change, the world changes, so it’s also possible that China’s view on what they want to do has evolved. In any case, Chas Freeman is right that China’s motivation for all its initiatives in space can’t just be to “boldly explore where no-one has been before”, they have to be working towards something. And Freeman is also absolutely right to lament that the U.S. decided to ban any cooperation in space with the Chinese. Those endeavors are something that could have been jointly developed as a multilateral effort to unite us all as a species… Instead China is now forced to go at it alone with Russia and we face a future where our petty divisions on Earth will be carried with us to space…

Where Winds Meet has some spectacular battle scenes on screen -- but the conflicts off-stage (west-east culture wars, psyops, business battles) are just as interesting. People in the game industry in the west are concerned—for several good reasons. Before we get there, take 20 seconds to check out the great-looking visuals, which come from the same studio that created Black Myth Wukong, a globally popular game launched in August 2024, based on the story of the Monkey King. Where Winds Meet also celebrates classic Chinese culture. It is set in the city of Kaifeng in 10th century China – and is filled with gorgeous images of that place. . CULTURAL DEPTH It has cultural depth, too. For example, everyone knows fireworks are an ancient Chinese art, but the game features molten metal spark showers, a popular art form pretty unknown outside China. In one scene you can see the flying apsaras, those Indian-influenced airborne women whose images adorn the ancient Dunhuang Caves on the silk road. Where Winds Meet is already among the favorites on Steam, the world’s biggest online game center. It includes many battles, of course. But there are related conflicts off line, in real life, too. . NUMBER ONE: CULTURE WARS. In many games released in the west, it is considered wrong to give players the choice of having a male or female character, because it implies there are just two sexes, which is a big no-no in the west. In Where the Winds Meet, players who opt for English language follow the western model, and are given the choice of Body Type I or Body Type II, no mention of forbidden words “male” and “female”. But players who opt for the Chinese version are given the choice of male or female. Trying to keep everyone happy! . NUMBER 2. HYBRID WARS, OR PSYOPS. From the moment the game came out, mysterious persons “revealed” that the game was made by Chinese people so it was a security threat, riddled with spyware. You can imagine them thinking that their gameplay information was being transmitted straight to Xi Jinping’s office! “Hmm. This incel sitting in a basement in his mother’s house prefers body type 2! Write that down, comrades.” But here’s the twist. Everybody ignored the warnings. By the end of the first day, people had played the game two million times, and that’s just the new version, the non-Chinese one. . NUMBER THREE: THE BUSINESS BATTLE The US groups which normally dominate the field, like Ubisoft, have repeatedly reported disappointing results recently. And some of the biggest recent hits have been from outside America. Black Myth Wukong was from China’s NetEase, Expedition 33 was from France, and this new game, Where Winds Meet, is also from NetEase. A popular video game reviewer called Hypnotic lamented the poor quality of games from the west—with the players blaming the designers and the designers blaming the players. “The east ends up releasing video games that end up blowing the doors down whenever they release,” he said. “And then you end up getting developers from the west that'll make up all kinds of excuses as to why these games are successful. They'll call it slop. They'll call it Chinese spyware. They'll call it whatever they want. But at the end of the day, at least somebody is trying to put out video games that players actually want, that isn't just indie developers.” . FIELD IS OPEN Now this does NOT mean that games from the east are uniformly taking over the global game industry. The west is still putting out some great games, with Expedition 33 being a good example. What it does mean is that China is catching up fast. We’ve seen this happening in many sectors. And as long as there’s a level playing field, it ultimately means that people get more choice. . A FAIRER, SAFER WORLD But more importantly than that, it gives people around the world a different image of China. The western mainstream media tends to create an image of China as an evil tech dystopia, sometimes literally describing it as a giant gulag. Games like this one show it to be community of creative people, producing fun products, and a place with a rich culture and an amazing history. The result, we hope, will be a fairer world – and a fairer world is a safer world.

The True GDP of Nations - The Hidden GDP For more than a century, the world has measured progress with numbers: GDP, stock indices, exchange rates. Money became the universal language of power. My friends and I confronted anti-China hawk and Richie Torres advisor Matt Pottinger at an Asia Society event. While Pottinger proposes dismantling China-U.S. relations and separating Taiwan from China (which will end up in WW3), I proposed instead that the U.S. and China are not enemies and should join hands in the Belt and Road Initiative to promote peace and economic development. For this, I was thrown to the ground and choked by security. It's no wonder Ritchie Torres is such an idiot when he's surrounded by Neo-con spooks who get paid to lie. For some background on who Pottinger is: Matt Pottinger has been a significant voice in the concerted effort to derail relations between the United States and China for the past 20 years. He began his career as a journalist in the late 1990s reporting for the Wall Street Journal on Chinese affairs. He then joined the U.S. Marine Corps, fighting three separate deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2007 and 2010. Eventually, he would serve the White House for four years on the National Security Council Staff, including as deputy national security adviser to President Trump from 2019 to 2021, leading the administration’s work as the Senior Director for Asia. In 2017, Pottinger had led a special delegation from the U.S. to the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, where President Xi Jinping had proposed building a world of prosperity through the construction of massive infrastructure projects, defeating poverty, and mutual technological advancement. The Belt and Road Initiative has been integrated with the Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and ASEAN, and represents a new platform for economic development among the nations of the Global South in an emerging multipolar world which prioritizes mutual benefit and cooperation. Instead of proposing that the U.S. take the opportunity to join the Belt and Road, which President Xi has made clear is open to the West to join, Pottinger has been a consistent provocateur in rapturing U.S.-China relations. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published on March 26, 2021, “Beijing Targets American Business,” Pottinger says that American businessmen must realize that the “ideological dimension of the competition” between China and the United States “is inescapable, even central.” Protecting U.S. hegemony and preventing China’s economic growth, “will require America and its allies to consider in every policy we adopt, every bill we introduce, and every partnership that government and industry undertake, whether it increases our collective leverage in this competition or surrenders leverage to a hostile dictatorship in Beijing.” It’s no wonder that Rep. Ritchie Torres is advised on China policy by Pottinger himself. Torres is a member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, which Pottinger has briefed and advised on policy. Both Torres and Pottinger believe in “the end of history” as author Francis Fukuyama famously declared at the end of the Cold War. This meant, that the U.S. and its Transatlantic partners would dominate the world and create a unipolar world, in which any potential power that would rise and present an alternative to the “rules-based order” would need to be stopped at all costs. Out of this theory that has guided U.S. policy since the first Bush administration, we have produced endless interventionist wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Ukraine. Of course, Pottinger has expressed his willingness to extend that our adventurist military policy to Taiwan, to provoke a global war with China. Such a policy is not in the American people’s interest. The U.S. economy is now decimated from 50+ years of deindustrialization and idiotic “Green” policy that has eaten up our once productive industries. China has taken the opposite path and is proposing to extend their prosperity to other nations in Africa, South America, and Asia. Instead of creating more wars to defend our hopeless imperial endeavors, we should return to our forgotten anti-colonial roots, and create a new security and development architecture with China and other willing partners.

To CNN International and to all the endless media outlets, big and small, together with all the well-meaning content producers of Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and every other platform that now shapes the global conversation, I would very much wish to pass the following post: As we speak, today’s protest has drawn roughly 2,000 participants. It is the lowest turnout so far, but even at its peak, participation never exceeded 8,000 people. So how is it that what much of the world has seen over the past days appears so enormous, so dramatic, so overwhelming? At some point, when the engineered digital hysteria of these days has passed and emotions have cooled, the democratic world should take a closer look at how the gap between reality and its representation became so vast. Not merely as a matter of this particular case, but as a symptom of something much larger. How could a tiny country become global news for reasons so disconnected from the reality on the ground? How could a local protest involving a few thousand people be transformed into an international spectacle? How could assumptions become facts, narratives become verdicts, and speculation become accepted truth before the basic facts were even established? And perhaps most importantly, what does it say about our information ecosystem when perception can travel around the world faster than reality itself? Because the reality is that there is no project yet. There is no building permit yet. There is no construction yet. There is not even a final design yet. There is only a vision and a plan: to transform Albania into the most attractive high-end tourism destination in this part of the world, while creating a net positive environmental development that, according to the current vision, would ultimately result in approximately 25% more trees and green space than exists today, alongside measurable improvements across multiple biodiversity indicators. The ambition is not merely to build. The ambition is to demonstrate that development and environmental enhancement can go hand in hand. That is precisely why some of the world’s leading experts in ecology, biodiversity, landscape architecture, environmental engineering and sustainable tourism are working on these concepts and parameters. Whether they succeed or fail is a matter for future assessment, science, public scrutiny and transparent debate. But presenting as an environmental catastrophe something that does not yet exist, has not yet been designed, has not yet been permitted, and whose stated objective is in fact to produce positive environmental outcomes, is not a serious contribution to public discussion. And yet, from this simple reality emerged a hurricane of digital hysteria, apocalyptic headlines, manufactured outrage and sweeping conclusions presented as established facts. Along the way came deepfakes, manipulated images, fabricated claims, coordinated amplification, anonymous networks and online behaviour that bears many of the characteristics of the hybrid information warfare that increasingly shapes public debate across democratic societies. Even more remarkably, social media platforms recorded an explosion in activity around this topic, with Albanian-language engagement increasing several-fold within just a few days. A significant part of this sudden surge appears to have been driven not by an organic expansion of public participation, but by the rapid proliferation of newly created profiles, anonymous accounts and pages with little or no identifiable history, raising legitimate questions about artificial amplification and the manufacturing of digital momentum.

I find this explanation of the Chinese system by Prof Keyu Jin (in a recent lecture at Harvard’s Fairbank center) absolutely fascinating. Keyu Jin is a professor of economics at LSE (London School of Economics) and serves on the board of companies like Credit Suisse. She’s also the daughter of Jin Liqun, former Vice Minister of finance of China so she’s a rare West-based academic (maybe even the only one) who actually has insight into the Chinese system from the inside. Essentially what she’s explaining is that a key reason why China was so successful economically is because of its decentralized nature, which creates two mutually compounding loops of competition, as opposed to one loop in the West. What does that mean? Well, contrary to popular belief that imagines China as being this centrally planned economy where almost everything is decided in Beijing, the inverse is actually true: China is actually one of the most decentralized countries in the world. To illustrate this, a metric that’s always amazed me is the fact that in China local governments (provinces, cities, villages, etc.) control a crazy 85% of the country's expenditures. On average that same metric for OECD countries is 33% (as in 64% of the expenditures are controlled at the federal/national level to China’s 15%). In the US for instance, which is already more decentralized than most given it’s a federation with states, only 45% of the country’s expenditures happen at the state and local level: almost twice less than in China! The effect of this, as Keyu Jin explains, is that provinces and larger municipalities in China have an immense degree of autonomy over the way they run their respective economies and fiercely compete with each other. This is the first loop. And then of course the second loop is that you have companies competing with each other in the market. As a result what constantly evolves in China is not only companies themselves but the environment in which they evolve: you constantly have this or that province running a new policy that proves very effective, making them gain an advantage vs other localities, initiative which is then copied by other localities. This makes the economic environment incredibly dynamic as it allows the state to move in unison with the economy, as opposed to slowing it down as is often the case in other countries. So what’s the role of the central government in all this? The key role, Keyu Jin argues, is setting broad objectives as well as personal management and promotion. And this is what makes the whole system work as therein lies the incentive for localities to compete with each other: because local officials know that if they do a better job than their peers, they’re on track for promotion by the central government. In “China Inc”, the central government is the board of directors and HR, presiding over an army of local CEOs with immense degrees of autonomy over their own “companies”. Keyu Jin gives the example of the solar industry. There was at some point (around 2005) a directive by the central government to develop the solar industry. The graph she shares in her talk is incredible: within a few years you had solar companies as well as patents related to research on solar technology pop up literally everywhere in China. With the result we all know about today: China today completely dominates the solar industry and solar technology (according to the International Energy Agency China's share in all the manufacturing stages of solar panels exceeds 80%). As she explains, this makes the Chinese system somewhat paradoxical as it is at the same time incredibly decentralized but also incredibly effective at mobilizing the country for centrally-decided objectives, in fact she goes as far as comparing this effectiveness to the country being in a constant state of “wartime mobilization”. An interesting comparison would be if you had all the countries in North America, the EU and North Africa (altogether roughly the population of China) all united under a common leadership deciding on common objectives and on the career path of all these countries’ officials, based on how well they achieve these objectives in their respective countries. We’re seeing this system being mobilized in its full strength today on leading edge semiconductors after US sanctions, and this is why these sanctions will undoubtedly ultimately prove so self-defeating: once the Chinese “wartime mobilization” machine is given an objective - and you can be sure this objective is prioritized very highly - the fight is essentially over, you can consider it done. Once you have hundreds of thousands of PhDs, companies and officials all at the same time competing and working within the same broad “China Inc” roof to make something happen, it will ultimately get done. If you want China NOT to develop a technology, the very last thing you want is to make them mobilize the full strength of the machine on it. With the sanctions the U.S. effectively told China: “please we beg you, do dedicate your formidable economic mobilization power to becoming a semiconductors powerhouse as fast as possible” 🤦 Another particularity of the system that Keyu Jin highlights - and I’ll end on this - is that this system also allows China to “allocate losses to certain groups of people, interest groups and sectors” in order to “enact system-level changes'', something she says is “very difficult for other governments with more political constraints to do”. For instance we’re seeing this play out in real-time with the real-estate industry: China recognized there was a housing bubble and Xi issued its “houses are for living in, not for speculation” directive. We’re since witnessing an engineered deflating of the bubble, ensuring to the extent possible that the losses are borne out by real estate developers and speculators, and not too much by society as a whole. This is part of the reason why China has never suffered a recession in the modern era: it does controlled demolition when necessary but tries to ensure it doesn’t suffer massive crises like we’ve repeatedly witnessed in the U.S. for instance. Of course no system is perfect. Weaknesses of the Chinese system include for instance local protectionism: there’s a perverse incentive for local officials to protect their local companies in order to give them a leg up vs companies from other provinces, which ultimately comes at the detriment of everyone. Another weakness is corruption, a sempiternal problem in China, where local officials - who are extremely powerful due to the nature of the system - will decide that getting promoted isn’t incentive enough and will try to cash in on their position of power. Cracking down on this is also a key remit of the central government and of course one of the major initiatives of Xi since he came to power. Lastly, another clear weakness is obviously that everything ultimately relies on the wisdom of what the system gets mobilized for, on the wisdom of these broader objectives coming from the central government. If they’re ill-thought, you effectively have a whole country working towards the wrong objectives… On this we’re often told that this problem doesn’t happen in countries where what the economy works towards is set more organically by the “invisible hand of the market” but if you think about it, it actually happens just the same as the “invisible hand of the market” actually equates “what’s good for shareholders” and what’s good for shareholders isn’t exactly always a perfect proxy for what’s good for society, to say the least... For instance it’s absolutely insane that we’ve just had 2-3 generations in the West where the best and brightest went to work for the finance industry to engineer ever more convoluted schemes to make money out of nothing, simply because it’s insanely profitable to do so. Anyone looking at this rationally can see it’s not exactly the best use of our precious human resources as a society… So all things considered, if I had to choose I’d much rather have our broad societal objectives set by human beings rather than by the theoretical concept of “what makes the most money deserves the most focus”. And as it turns out the Chinese system actually fares decently well against capitalism: human beings aren’t evidently too bad at deciding what human beings should work on if they’re being thoughtful and strategic about it.

Tales of Cities | Tongren, where China's matcha capital hides in plain sight Most people who drink matcha assume it is Japanese. In Tongren, a mountain city tucked into southwest China's Guizhou Province, that assumption meets a quiet correction. The tea tradition long associated with Japan can be traced back further to China's Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279). During the Song Dynasty, a method called diancha, whisking powdered tea into hot water until it turns pale and frothy, was already widespread among monks and scholars. Gu Lijun, a county-level inheritor of that Song Dynasty tradition, traces the practice back even earlier still, to the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420). The technique now associated with Japanese tea ceremony, in other words, started in China, centuries before it ever crossed the sea. Tongren is now working to reclaim that origin story with production rather than just history. The city wears the title "China's matcha capital" for good reason, ranking first nationally and second worldwide in matcha production and sales. That scale is easy to state as a statistic and harder to picture, until you trace the leaf back to the mountain that makes it possible. Mount Fanjing rises more than 2,500 meters above the surrounding tea country, its ancient rock formations emerging from clouds that never quite leave, wrapped in mist and rain for more than 200 days a year, long enough that locals treat a clear day at the summit as luck rather than expectation. It is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, home to plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, and the climb to its Red Cloud Golden Summit is demanding by design, steep enough in places to require hands as well as feet. It is a mountain that guards its own secrets. Almost everything grown in its shadow carries that same difficulty, and benefits from it. At the Qizimei Tea Garden in Jiangkou county, plantation head Chen Chunlian tends 220 mu (about 14.67 hectares) of Fuding Dabai, Wuniuzao and Longjing tea, all destined to become tencha, the ground raw material for matcha, with Mount Fanjing visible from the rows themselves. Walk the plantation's lower slopes and the rows of low, dense bushes stretch across the hillside in every direction, broken only by mist rolling down from above, tended by farmers who speak of the mountain with a quiet, matter-of-fact devotion, as though caring for something this rare were simply what one does here. Chen explains that the mountain's high altitude, limited sunlight and near-constant cloud cover raise the amino acid content of the leaves, improving quality well beyond what flatland tea can achieve. Farmers add a further layer of engineering before harvest, covering the plants to block out even more light. Less sunlight means more chlorophyll and more theanine, the compound chemistry behind both matcha's saturated green color and its umami depth. The effect has a name in the trade: "covered aroma." Gu describes the resulting flavor in more familiar terms, bright and fresh, carrying what tea drinkers usually just call "the aroma of seaweed." From there, the leaf still has a distance to travel before it becomes the powder found on shelves abroad. At Gui Tea Group's matcha workshop, production supervisor Li Tingbao oversees the fine processing stage: aroma enhancement, color sorting, grinding and screening, followed by air separation, a step that filters out stems before the refined tea drops into a material bin to await blending. Only after grinding does it finally become matcha in the form most people would recognize. Li reports that the workshop's output has grown quickly, from roughly 2,500 tonnes in 2025 to an expected 5,000 tonnes this year, doubling in a single season and underscoring how fast global demand has moved. What happens to that matcha afterward is where Tongren's ambitions become most visible, and most inventive, and it tracks a pattern playing out across the industry worldwide, where matcha has moved well past the teacup into bakery cases, dessert menus and skincare shelves. Tang Yunpeng, general manager of Guizhou Guigui Matcha Food Co., Ltd., leads a team developing matcha products well outside tradition: sun cakes with a flaky, crumbly crust wrapped around matcha filling, cheesecakes, chocolates. Tongren's matcha, Tang notes, carries a stronger bitterness and fuller flavor than matcha grown elsewhere, a distinction that comes through clearly once it is baked, whisked or melted into something else. Elsewhere in the city, matcha turns up in dumplings, noodles, beer, chapstick, hand lotion and perfume. At this point, matcha in Tongren is less an ingredient than a category of its own. At a local nongjiale, a uniquely Chinese agritainment venue operated by local farmers that doubles as a restaurant and a window into local life, located in Yunshe village of Taiping town in Tongren's Jiangkou county, villager Yang Yanfei's table typically arrives loaded with Larou, the salt-cured smoked pork that anchors Guizhou home cooking, alongside a dish that still catches newcomers off guard: matcha sturgeon, the tea's flavor threaded lightly through the fish rather than layered over it. It is not a novelty so much as evidence of how completely matcha has settled into daily life here, alongside the area's clean air and unspoiled mountains and water, which Yang credits as the real foundation beneath all of it. For the people who make Tongren's matcha economy run, from tea garden to processing floor to test kitchen, the ambitions are collective, and they add up to something larger than any single product. Chen speaks of the quiet pride in supplying the raw material that starts the entire chain. Tang hopes matcha becomes something bigger still: a calling card not just for Tongren, but for Guizhou and for China as a whole. As matcha continues its rise in cafes and kitchens far beyond Guizhou, Tongren's name is beginning to travel with it.
