China’s playbook includes using academics & unofficial voices to float baseless territorial claims, then testing reactions. The Philippines has every right to reject this. Sovereignty is decided by international law & official channels, not propaganda or revisionist narratives.

China has been relatively restrained toward the Philippines because Manila is still an ASEAN member. But this is changing. The Philippines is no longer just making noise in the South China Sea. It is trying to manufacture territorial claims over Chinese waters, coordinate with external powers, and even work with Japan — a defeated fascist state that once slaughtered Asians and burned half the region — to pressure China over territory that does not belong to them. That crosses a line. The key phrase in this Chinese report is not just “illegal claims.” It is this: undermining the post-WWII international order. That is the real signal. China is no longer treating the Philippines as a small neighbor being manipulated by Washington. It is beginning to treat Manila as part of the same fascist militarism chain as Japan: using colonial-era arrangements, foreign backing, and legal theater to challenge the territorial order created after Japan’s defeat. The Philippines was shaped by Spanish and American colonial rule. Its boundaries were defined by treaties. None of those treaties gave it Huangyan Dao. None of them gave it China’s Nansha Islands. Proximity is not sovereignty. If proximity decided ownership, the world map would collapse overnight. So when Manila claims Chinese islands because they are “closer,” it is not defending international law. It is trying to rewrite it. And when it does so alongside Japan, the symbolism becomes even uglier: a former colony and a former fascist aggressor trying to divide the waters of a WWII victor. China’s patience is not weakness. Reports like this are not just academic documents. They are legal groundwork. And once Beijing starts framing your actions as a threat to the postwar international order, you are no longer just playing a media game. You are being placed in the same historical category as the countries that tried to overturn Asia by force. China is putting the Philippines in Fascist Japan’s historical shadow.

Since I got attacked for calling what Natasha Hausdorff is saying here nonsense, here's the actual legal breakdown. This argument misunderstands how international law works because it mixes together three different legal questions: (1) who has sovereignty, (2) what uti possidetis juris means, (3) what constitutes an occupation. She’s right that uti possidetis juris was meant to preserve existing colonial administrative borders when colonies become independent. It was developed mainly in Latin America and Africa to prevent newly independent states from fighting over borders. But the rule does not say that whichever new state emerges automatically inherits every inch of a former colony. Unlike in Latin America and Africa, there was no single, uncontested successor after the British Mandate in the context of Palestine. The British ended colonial rule, the UN Partition Plan was never implemented as binding law, war broke out, Israel declared independence, Jordan took control of the West Bank, and Egypt administered Gaza. This sequence of events is why international law practitioners generally reject the application of uti possidetis to the Israel/post-Mandate context. Even if someone believes that Israel had a stronger territorial claim in 1967, that still doesn't address the occupation point. Under IHL, occupation is based on effective military control, not on who has the better sovereignty claim. The reason why the law of occupation exists is to protect civilians while territorial disputes remain unresolved. Whether a war was defensive or whether the previous controller had lawful title does not determine whether occupation law applies. This is exactly why the ICJ has consistently held that the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) is occupied territory. The court was fully aware that Jordan's annexation of the West Bank was not widely recognized and that Egypt never claimed sovereignty over Gaza. Even so, it still concluded that Israel is an occupying power because occupation is a question of control, NOT settled sovereignty. Even if uti possidetis applied, she completely ignores the Palestinian right to self-determination, which is distinct from territorial succession claims. International law recognizes both the law of occupation and the Palestinian right to self-determination regardless of unresolved sovereignty claims. These aren’t issues that boil down to a simple political disagreement; the facts can’t be disputed. I encourage her and everyone to look at the relevant ICJ advisory opinions from 2004 and 2024, the ruling in Burkina Faso v. Mali, and Article 42 of the Hague Regulations.

WHEN DIPLOMACY MEETS DISRESPECT: CHINA’S BULLYING HAS GONE TOO FAR 🇵🇭 Since 2022, the Philippines has filed 245 diplomatic protests against China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea — our own 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone recognized under international law. Yet, the harassment continues. Chinese Coast Guard ships ram our vessels, use military-grade lasers on our crew, block food and fuel deliveries to our troops, and deploy maritime militia and coast guard vessels to intimidate our fishermen and soldiers — even attempting to steal from our waters, all within our rightful territory. These are not “misunderstandings.” They are deliberate acts of bullying by a powerful nation against a smaller one that seeks only peace through law. Even with global condemnation and the 2016 Hague Ruling invalidating China’s “nine-dash line” claim, Beijing continues to act as if our waters are theirs — trampling on international law and showing total disrespect for the sovereignty of smaller nations. We may not match China’s size, but our courage is greater than their intimidation. This is not just a fight for islands — it is a fight for dignity, freedom, and the future of every Filipino who depends on our seas to live and feed their families. 🌊 Our message to the world: You cannot bully a nation that stands united. The West Philippine Sea is ours — by law, by history, by right. Stand firm. Speak up. Share the truth. Defend our seas. #WestPhilippineSea #WestPhilippineSeaAtinIto #sovereigntythroughlaw #notobullyingatsea #StandWithThePhilippines #WestPhilippineSeaIsOurs

For the first time, China’s Defense Ministry has made it clear: Zhongye Dao is China’s sacred and inviolable territory. The Philippines can abandon its fantasy of coveting land that does not belong to it. This entire South China Sea drama is built on one dirty logic: provoke China, hide behind America, cry “small country” when China responds, then sell the performance as sovereignty. But sovereignty is not a pity card. The Philippines grounded that rusting warship on Ren’ai Jiao one day after the U.S. bombed China’s embassy in Belgrade. Chinese blood had not even dried, and Manila moved to seize Chinese territory. That was a blood debt written into the reef. A country that builds its “sovereignty” by stepping over Chinese corpses has no moral ground to cry victim when China comes to collect its own territory back. For decades, Manila has survived by kneeling to whoever arrived with a bigger flag: When Spanish colonists arrived, it knelt before Spain. When American colonists arrived, it knelt before America. When Japanese fascists arrived, it knelt before Japan’s fascists. When Japanese fascists left, it continued kneeling before America. The Philippines may be poor, but it has many masters. Now it wants to play victim while acting as Washington’s rented knife in the South China Sea. China has negotiated enough. China has tolerated enough. China has shown enough restraint to people who read restraint as permission. Zhongye Dao is Chinese territory. Ren’ai Jiao is Chinese territory. Nansha Qundao is Chinese territory. Political shows staged by Philippine officials cannot change history, law, or power. The circus ends. Sovereignty returns to the owner.
