UNUSUAL China begins building the “New Three Gorges” China has announced the launch of a major new project — the construction of the “Three Gorges” waterway on the Yangtze River, which will include the largest navigation gate in the world. The project, costing 77.2 billion yuan (£11.4 billion), includes a new navigation channel at the Three Gorges Dam — the largest engineering project in the world — as well as an expansion of the dam’s capacity at Gezhouba downstream on the Yangtze. It is designed for vessels of up to 10,000 tons.
