🔴While Zimbabwe is struggling to complete the US$85 million Mbudzi Traffic Interchange project in Harare since 2022, with the initial completion deadline of 31 July 2024 having come and gone amid setbacks, China built one of best-known roads in the world - the Yaxi highway, part of the Beijing-Kunming Expressway, which connects the cities of Ya'an and Xichang, in just five years at a cost US$3 billion. The 240-kilometre section - which is like slightly past Kwekwe from Harare heading towards Bulawayo - in Sichuan province from Ya'an to Xichang, known as the Yaxi Expressway, is nicknamed the ladder to heaven or highway above the clouds. Located in southwest China's Sichuan province, the Yaxi highway is an engineering marvel with 270 viaducts and 25 tunnels. In Zimbabwe, such a simple interchange project has taken three years and yet still the completion date is unknown. The Zimbabwean project cost is extortionate and controversial. There a world of a difference between Zimbabwe and China in terms of scale, but the most shocking thing is that Harare has virtually learnt nothing from Beijing, its purported all-weather friend.
