The issue may be more visceral than we care to admit. There is something instinctively offensive about the whole enterprise. Granted. But revulsion alone hardly renders an objection substantive. The “who loves these children?” argument similarly fails to land the blow. If the same billionaire funded an orphanage for a thousand children, guaranteeing exemplary care and a dedicated nanny for each, his inability to wake personally with every sick child at three in the morning would hardly register as a moral scandal. The difficult question is whether a child is entitled to some irreducible minimum of parental presence, attachment, or moral formation, below which the law is obliged to intervene. Perhaps. But if that is to be the principle, there is no reason its protection should attach to surrogacy alone. Applied consistently, it would indict ordinary biological parents long before the billionaire came into view.
