“In 2024, Chinese factories installed roughly 300,000 new industrial robots. American factories installed 30,000. Today, there are now more than 2 million industrial robots working in Chinese factories. In the U.S., the number is one-fifth that,” says Rush Doshi, director of CFR’s China Strategy Initiative and assistant professor at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. “China is investing in the future, it’s pulling ahead in research publications and patent filings, and pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into the robotics sector.”

The AI-controlled robots were supplied by Booster Robotics for the tournament and have the skills of 5 to 6 year old children. Robots were seen getting carried off the field on stretchers after falling over. Booster Robotics founder Cheng Hao says the robots' abilities will exponentially increase over time and will eventually challenge adult teams. "We chose the football scenario for robot competition primarily for two reasons: first, to encourage students to apply their algorithmic skills to real-world robotics," Cheng said. "Second, to showcase the robots' ability to walk autonomously and stably, withstand collisions, and demonstrate higher levels of intelligence and safety."

A pint-sized robot named Erbai in China has gone viral after it "kidnapped" dozens of larger robots at a robot showroom in China. People are finding the incident both hilarious and territying. The event, captured on CCTV, shows Erbai -an Al-powered robot - engaging in human-like conversations with other robots at the showroom to convince them to "go home" with it. The footage shows Erbai roaming the hallways at midnight, it then stops before a row of larger robots and asks one, "Are you still working overtime?" This machine runs on a system called WALL-A, which acts as a single continuous AI brain rather than a list of pre-written rules. They built this AI foundation model to perceive its surroundings and make its own decisions without human guidance. It processes visual data and plans multi-step actions. Sporting a branded suit and head-mounted router, the robots can vacuum the floor, take out the trash and wipe down countertops. They can even wash their own “hands” with soap and water—although at this stage in the tech, it looks like at least that task is much quicker to do with human hands. If Tau figures out how to automate doing dishes or laundry, then we’re really cooking.

Designed for stairs, scaffolding, cluttered spaces and unstable terrain, the humanoid features a 27kg payload, 5-hour battery life and 0.8m/s walking speed. Within 18 months of inception, they shipped and deployed their first humanoid robot to an industrial customer.
