“I took Tylenol and my kids are just fine.” Or “I never took Tylenol and my kid is autistic.” Hear me out: Smoking is linked to lung cancer, But smoking is not the only thing that causes lung cancer. Also, smoking does not guarantee lung cancer. Wouldn’t it be reasonable that Tylenol is the same way? Tylenol is linked to autism, But Tylenol is not the only thing that causes autism. Also, Tylenol does not guarantee autism.

Just because I am an Arab, it does not mean that Jews should become less human to me. Just because my name is Ahmed, it does not mean that I should be celebrating Jewish blood spilled in Israel. Just because my name is Ahmed, it does not mean that my mind and tongue are devoted to Mohammed’s 7th-century battlefields and books. The Dean’s actual public statement mirrored exactly what was written in the review article itself: “This biological evidence lends support to the possibility of a causal relationship between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism.” That is not the same as saying there is evidence for causation. In science, it’s common to note that evidence of association can support the possibility of causation, but that’s very different from actually finding causal evidence. Misquoting him so deliberately and egregiously is misleading the public, creating confusion, and politicizing an active scientific debate. We deserve honest communication about evidence.
