Local MP Mark Pritchard has raised concerns in Parliament about Home Office plans to house asylum seekers in Stoke Heath, near Market Drayton. Stoke Heath has around 60 homes, with plans being pushed to place up to 121 asylum seekers in the village. Shropshire Council says it does not know exactly who will be moved in and insists the decision is being made by the Home Office, not the council itself. Local residents are demanding answers about the impact on housing, services and the safety of their community. We must offer our support whenever it’s needed, as with Crowborough. This is unacceptable.

This really is a symbol of everything wrong with modern Ireland. Demolishing a family home during a housing crisis because it violated planning laws. But the official government policy for housing asylum seekers is to bypass planning laws. In 2022 the government introduced a law allowing any number of facilities including hospitals, army barracks, shops, hotels, and even places of worship to be used for asylum seeker housing. Basically they exempted every structure in Ireland from planning laws as long as it was housing asylum seekers. That law has been extended to the end of 2028. One rule for Irish people, another when it comes to foreigners.

🚨ASYLUM SEEKERS DESERVE MORE MONEY AND BETTER HOUSING🚨 Senedd members urged the Government to give asylum seekers more money and better housing. In a statement titled "Refugee Week: Wales a Nation of Sanctuary", Julie James said she was "frustrated" the request was ignored. The requests, made in 2018, provide further clarity on the purpose of the Nation of Sanctuary policy. James confirmed Welsh Government "advocated for increasing financial support for asylum seekers awaiting decisions, additional money for local authorities to support asylum seekers in their area and improved asylum accommodation standards". James condemned the Government for failing to increase the money paid to asylum seekers. "Unfortunately, to say the least, the UK Government does not appear to have incorporated our recommendations in the design of their forthcoming asylum accommodation contracts or significantly increased financial support in the asylum system," she said. "It is no secret that we are often frustrated by the UK Government's decisions in relation to asylum and migration matters," she added. James also criticised "negative effects" of what she considered hardline UK Government policies on asylum, and confirmed she planned to intervene. "We are continuing to consider improvements that we can make to support those seeking sanctuary, including looking at extending eligibility for education grants and concessionary transport to asylum seekers," she said. A request to ease the restrictions on asylum seekers' access to public money was also made. James claimed this was essential to integration and urged the Home Office "not to undermine this intention by placing Welsh Government funding streams on the list of prohibited public funds in the immigration rules". James' statement was preceded by a performance by "Oasis", a Welsh Government funded choir for asylum seekers. She urged colleagues to demonstrate to them that "Wales, a small nation, punches above its weight when it comes to providing sanctuary". Senedd members have, in the past few weeks, placed significant emphasis on the term "integration", claiming this is the real purpose of the Nation of Sanctuary policy. He attempts the usual escape act by announcing that his government has “built 14,000 new prison places”. Unfortunately for him, the arithmetic hasn’t been briefed: they previously cut 13,500 places, so the grand “increase” is a net gain of roughly 500. It’s the same magic trick they used with policing: remove 23,000 officers, add 20,000 back, and then applaud themselves for being 3,000 short. It’s austerity as performance art break it first, fix part of it later, and declare the whole thing a triumph. Never trust a Tory.

Channel 4 News cover the creation and rise of hotels for asylum seekers Your reminder that it was the Conservative government that created this problem by stopping the processing of asylum seeker applications because they thought their Rwanda scheme which only send 4 volunteers to Rwanda was the solution to the UK being outside the EU with Brexit and unable to return asylum seekers back to the first country they entered the EU as we were no long party to the Dublin agreement, which in turn is the reason why so many asylum seekers come to the UK on small boats because they know that outside the EU the mechanism to return them no longer exists I.e. all of this was created by the Conservatives and Labour are now in. the process of trying to fix this, and while they've done some positive things they still have a long way to go, including doing the thing which they repeatedly called for in opposition but still haven't done in government: safe and legal routes
