Here are some facts about the Actor Christopher Lee, who plays Saruman in Lord of The Rings. Among a host of other big roles in a career spanning 60 years. 1) He is a descendant of Charlemagne, yes, the "Emperor of the West" (and they even look alike). 2) He was the inspiration behind James Bond, his cousin Ian Fleming wrote the novel with him in mind. 3) He is the only one of the "Lord of the Rings" cast who knew Tolkien personally. 4) He almost married a member of Swedish royalty, permission was granted by the King of Sweden himself. 5) He witnessed the last guillotine execution in France. 6) And last but not least, during World War II he hunted Nazis. What a life this man had, it's worth a documentary.

As a devoted Tolkien fan, he felt it was “shocking” for such a major character to simply vanish. In protest, he refused to attend the world premiere. Peter Jackson argued the scene slowed the pacing yet the Extended Edition restored it: Saruman stabbed by Gríma and falling from Orthanc. And the most iconic detail? During filming, Jackson asked Lee to scream when stabbed. Lee replied: “Do you know what sound a man makes when he’s stabbed in the back? Because I do.” Thanks to his WWII experience, he explained a real stab produces only a sharp gasp not a scream.
