Christopher Nolan didn’t want a “humanoid” robot fo Interstellar. He asked for something radically different: a functional machine, almost military, far from science fiction clichés. The design of TARS (and CASE) was inspired by a mix of Kubrick’s monolith (2001: A Space Odyssey) and modular tools, with a brutalist style.

Christopher Nolan: "I had some very brave producer at some point had anonymously said of me, 'He's a cold guy who makes cold films,' years before, and that is sort of stuck on me for several projects."
