Christopher Nolan reveals the first time an actor said no to him was David Bowie, and he had to personally beg him to change his mind. Jimmy Fallon: Have you ever gotten a “no”? Christopher Nolan: Have I ever gotten a “no”? Yeah, I have. Jimmy Fallon: Besides me when I said I didn’t want to do Batman. Christopher Nolan: The only “no” I’ll admit to is David Bowie for The Prestige. He was my great idol, and I thought he’d be perfect to play Nikola Tesla. Christopher Nolan: We sent him the script and everything, and he said no. It was the first time I ever went back and said, “Can I just go and meet him? Can I try and convince him in the room?” Christopher Nolan: They agreed, so I quickly wrote him a better speech for his first appearance, showed up with a new script, and basically begged. I managed to turn that “no” into a “yes.” Jimmy Fallon: Yes! But you did get a “no” from the coolest kid in school.
