This is one of the most expensive silent movie stunts of all time. This shot from Buster Keaton's "The General" (1926) cost $42,000 (equal to $600,000 today). The production company left the wreckage of the train in the Row River, south of Cottage Grove in Oregon. The site became a tourist attraction until 1944 when the wreckage was finally salvaged and scrapped during World War II. "The General" went way over budget, costing $750,000 (equal to $11 million today) in total. Some of the unforeseen costs included "Keaton being knocked unconscious; an assistant director being shot in the face with a blank cartridge; a train wheel running over a brakeman's foot, resulting in a $2,900 lawsuit; and the train's wood-burning engine causing numerous fires. History of Times Square During the 1980s, Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins began a redevelopment project for Midtown Manhattan that included Times Square. In the 1990s, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani tackled the project to clean up the area with the closure of pornographic theaters, sex shops and the purchase of the nine historic theaters on 42nd Street by the State of New York. Times Square is located between 7th Avenue and Broadway, and 42nd and 47th streets, it is currently the heart of the city in general and of the New York theater district in particular. #Bangladesh: India's Reckless Actions Are Worsening the Flood Crisis in Southeast Bangladesh For the first time in generations, Bangladesh's entire southeastern region is facing its worst flooding in history affecting millions of people. The cause? Indian authorities opened the gates of the Dumbur Reservoir in Tripura for the first time in three decades, releasing massive volumes of water into an already rain-soaked region. (Read: Could there have been flooding without India opening the Dumbur Reservoir gates? Perhaps yes, but on a significantly smaller scale. The sudden release of water from the dam has inundated the region to an extent it hasn't experienced in generations. International law obliges India to notify Bangladesh of any actions that could cause significant harm downstream. Yet, India's failure to notify Bangladesh before opening the gates has caused significant distress and damage. Unfortunately, the Dumbur Reservoir is just one of many dams India has built on the rivers that flow into Bangladesh. Of the 54 transboundary rivers shared between the two countries, India has constructed dams on at least 30 of them, with the Farakka Dam being the most infamous for its catastrophic impact on northern Bangladesh. India's unilateral construction of dams and its arbitrary control of water flows have become a constant threat to Bangladesh, causing either drought or flooding downstream. This reckless behavior has devastated millions of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. For example, over 80% of Bangladesh's 20 million small farmers depend on water flowing through these transboundary rivers to grow rice. Yet, India has consistently ignored these obligations and has never acknowledged the rights of Bangladesh and its people under international law. Despite these hostile actions, Indian officials continue to claim that they are friendly neighbors—yet they wonder why Bangladeshis hold such deep resentment against them. Is India truly a friendly neighbor to Bangladesh? Their actions speak louder than their words.

In Remembrance of Hedy Lamarr. Born | November 9, 1914 in Vienna, Austria. Died | January 19, 2000 aged 85 in Casselberry, Florida, USA. Hedy Lamarr, the woman many critics and fans alike regard as the most beautiful ever to appear in films, was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of Gertrud (Lichtwitz), from Budapest, and Emil Kiesler, a banker from Lemberg (now known as Lviv). Her parents were both from Jewish families. Hedwig had a calm childhood, but it was cinema that fascinated her. By the time she was a teenager, she decided to drop out of school and seek fame as an actress, and was a student of theatre director Max Reinhardt in Berlin. Her first role was a bit part in the German film Geld auf der Straße (1930) (aka “Money on the Street”) in 1930. She was attractive and talented enough to be in three more German productions in 1931, but it would be her fifth film that catapulted her to worldwide fame. In 1932 she appeared in a Czech film called Ekstase (US title: “Ecstasy”) and had made the gutsy move to appear nude. While I initially expected more spotlight on the alleged internal enablers within India like Chidambaram, the film instead chooses to focus heavily on the story of Rehman Dakait, weaving his role into the larger narrative of cross-border threats. I wish they would dare to take out names at least in Part 2. It was a natural grotto opening onto the sea, and he turned it into a private dining hall, with pools of water reaching into the mouth of the cave and a platform where he and his guests reclined to eat, the waves echoing off the rock around them... Definitely not a bad place to host dinner. The sculpture stood at the deepest point of the cave and it showed the most terrifying scene in Homer's poem, when Odysseus and his men are trapped inside the cave of Polyphemus, a one-eyed man-eating giant who has sealed them in with a boulder too heavy to move and is eating the crew alive, one by one. Odysseus cannot simply kill him in his sleep, or they will be entombed with the corpse forever. So he gets the giant drunk, waits for him to pass out, hardens the tip of an olive-wood stake in the fire, and drives it into the Cyclops's single eye. The sculptors depicted the instant just before the stake goes in... The colossal figure of Polyphemus sprawls backward, drunk and unaware. Odysseus, the one closest to the Cyclops, and three of his men strain upward with the spike. It was carved larger than life and set in shadow at the back of the grotto, so that as the lamplight shifted, the whole scene seemed to move over the emperor's dinner. The Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius both record that in the year 26 AD, while Tiberius was dining there, rocks fell from the roof of the grotto, crushing several of his attendants and nearly killing the emperor, who was shielded and dragged out. I applaud the womenfolk from different segments of our society who are standing firm to resist fascism. Their sacrifices and efforts will always be remembered. 14th of March marked a day of resistance against fascism which is the hallmark of the current regime. Police and Rangers were deployed in huge numbers around Chairman Imran Khan’s residence to unlawfully arrest the former Prime Minister, where thousands of his supporters had gathered to deny the regime from executing the illegitimate action. We resisted tooth and nail against relentless shelling and baton charge denying the arrest of our Chairman. For hours on end, I suffered a barrage of shelling but stayed steadfast to lead the unarmed protestors. Moreover, the day of 25th of May last year will go down in Pakistan’s history as a day that, amongst other features, signified the rise of Pakistani women to stand up for their rights in the face of extreme state barbarism. Countless ladies from all walks of life showed their will and resilience that day as they came to the streets in protest against the imported Government, braving teargas shells and police baton charge. Amongst the political leadership, most remarkable of all was the sheer strength of character and courage shown by Dr. Yasmin Rashid, a 71-year-old cancer survivor who was harassed by the police initially the night before the march and then on the roads, as police goons damaged her car, smashing the windscreen and pulled her off the vehicle. The remarkably resilient lady, however, was not intimidated and continued her journey to Islamabad. I myself braved through some of the most gruesome behaviour of police as innocent protestors in my convoy from Southern Punjab were continually subjected to the worst form of shelling by the police. Multiple vehicles were smashed up by thugs in bandannas facilitating the police, as it was clear the Government was hellbent on trampling over the right of peaceful protest we as the citizens of Pakistan are supposed to have. I also continually updated the progress of the march from my social media accounts. Additionally, the bravery shown by Shireen Mazari – the way she has risen to challenge and has exposed sheer hypocrisy and double standards is also commendable. She has most effectively taken up the burning issue of the diplomatic cipher at the heart of the regime change episode, and called out different parties to clarify their positions regarding how they are fulfilling their duties to the country. I have said this before and I shall say it again: the attacks on Sam 'Dzata' George 🦁🇬🇭 are not organic. They are coordinated, laced with rage-baiting from some quarters on X. An X influencer once confessed to me that he actually enjoys dragging Sam George. To him, it’s just fun and cruise, yet he holds no real grudge. SMH. Honestly, I’m yet to meet anyone who has a genuine, solid reason to dislike him. Back when the NDC was in opposition, Sam George was one of the strongest, most fearless voices; on traditional media, social media, and right there on the grounds. His energy, bravery, and relentless fight played a huge part in the NDC’s victory. The damage he inflicted on the NPP is something they will never forget… and that, we all know, is the real source behind some of these attacks. Yet, amidst all the noise, he remains resolute and absolute in the execution of his duty. He holds himself to the highest standards. The previous government left behind such a massive mess that if we don’t fix it quickly, our country could be doomed. He fully understands the reset agenda and has thrown himself into it with total seriousness. Lest we forget, 1. He fought hard to increase our data volumes, pushing MTN’s popular bundle from 92GB to 214GB and Telecel’s from around 90GB to 250GB. Ghanaians are now getting far more value for their money. The irony? The haters now have even more data to come online and insult him. Lol. I made my first purchase in October 2025, and it actually lasted until February 2026! 2. He also put pressure on MultiChoice/DStv to improve their offerings and ease the burden on subscribers. Users have admitted that without his intervention, subscriptions could have hit GH¢600, but for the past 8 months, it has stayed at GH¢375. That means each DStv user has saved around GH¢1,800 so far. 3. To seriously tackle mobile money (MoMo) fraud, he is pushing for a proper, comprehensive SIM re-registration exercise. 4. Two weeks ago, he distributed laptops to all 130 learning centres to kick-start the ambitious One Million Coders programme. The registration website is now open and live. 6. Last Friday, he launched the National AI Strategy, a bold move that sets the tone for a major transformation of artificial intelligence not just in Ghana, but across Africa. 7. He is currently leading serious efforts to fully integrate Ghana into the PayPal ecosystem, opening new doors for digital payments and the economy. 8. He has issued a strong policy directive to telcos to fix network challenges and boost connectivity nationwide. He demanded 800 new cell sites from MTN alone this year and they have agreed. This is a massive win. In the last 8 years, the average annual rollout was around 200 sites, with some years as low as 30–50. Now in 2026, MTN alone is rolling out 800. Network coverage and speed across the country are about to improve significantly.
