One of the most impactful initiatives advancing civics and civil discourse in our nation is the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI). Across Florida, students are not just reading about civics—they’re practicing it through respectful debate and dialogue. Since its 2020 launch, FCDI has grown from just 59 teams in 11 districts to over 330 teams in all 67 districts statewide.

One of the most impactful initiatives advancing civics and civil discourse in our nation is the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI). Across Florida, students are not just reading about civics—they’re practicing it through respectful debate and dialogue. We don’t have a voter registration problem in Louisiana — we have a voter turnout problem. Part of that is because too few people are consistently engaging our communities, organizing, and educating people. That’s why I’m working to bring Civics for the People to Shreveport and New Orleans next month. Knowledge and turnout go hand in hand. We need both if we’re serious about changing our outcomes. ⭕️ Richard Haass, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations and one of Washington’s most prominent foreign policy analysts, writes in his Substack that the path forward for the U.S. is narrowing fast. He identifies three options now facing the Trump administration: escalation, drift, and negotiation. He concludes negotiation is “the least bad option.” The two central issues are the Strait — whose closure “is causing havoc to the global economy and the world’s ability to feed itself” — and Iran’s nuclear program. On the Strait, Haass proposes ending the blockade in exchange for Iran ceding control over who can transit. On nukes, he calls for a negotiated enrichment ceiling under intrusive monitoring, similar to the 2015 JCPOA. Without a deal, he warns, the current state of drift “will likely persist,” with significant and worsening economic consequences. Haass writes that “this was a war that did not need to happen — a war of choice — and, on balance, it has left the United States worse off.”
