CIVILIAN CONTROL OF THE MILITARY

So well said @Gen_RajShukla I once asked my father @SatishBahri how the Pakistan Army could have taken such a different path from the Indian Army so early in their respective histories, especially when both had the same genesis, the British Indian Army under colonial rule. He believed that both armies inherited the British tradition of professional discipline and political non-interference. Yet Pakistan’s political circumstances gradually drew its army into governance, while India’s political institutions kept its army firmly under civilian control. The two armies began with remarkably similar foundations; it was the states they served that subsequently gave them very different roles. The divergence was not created by Partition overnight but it was a process.

The number of times Gen. Raj Shukla has spoken about the ability to pick up Hafiz Sayed it looks to me as if a plan almost exists for that eventuality. Jai Hind Sir

Very well explained. This is the constitutional position, & the reality, of the armed forces in Inda. Civilian control of the armed forces implies elected reps, not bureaucratic control, which advises the minister. The President is the Supreme Commander of the defence forces.

Not an elevated principle at all. So the case study is Pak army. Wow. Same old platitudes. Why is the civilian allowed to be wrong. After all we all live in the same nation. Are Politicians direct God descendants. This isn’t a beautiful system. And not supporting coup at all.

I think most people miss to mention the most striking feature that made civilian supremacy possible in India was the size of India and the size of its military, otherwise all other features that made Army a muscleman in Pakistan, existed in India as well. That, and the grassroot leadership was all concentrated in India and believed in India after ‘47 without being tied to elite circles of politics, army and feudal resources. Pakistan did not inherit any grassroot leadership, but only feudal rulers.

Very nicely articulated. Great to hear such a clarity of thoughts and wisdom. Despite being one of the powerful army in the world, it doesn’t have misplaced ambitions. However the case is different in Pak and they have ruined their country
