He was a black teenager with married, black, professional parents in the home. In the 1980s, it was shocking to see any black person on TV who wasn’t a butler, a maid, a slave, a drug dealer or a buffoon. The Huxtables changed all of that — bringing black excellence and dignity to the mainstream. It was so arresting, so revolutionary, that 30 million Americans tuned in to watch every week. Malcolm played Theo perfectly— and he carried the most important aspects of the character forward into his later roles — and his real life. He was always relatable, and he used his platform in a positive way. Theo the character and Malcolm the man will long be missed.
