"He was asking for help, because they were beating him to death." In Italy on Sunday, 43-year-old Moroccan-born Abderrahim Fakir died while police officers were restraining him on the ground. The footage has drawn comparisons to the killing of George Floyd. Fakir was killed in Pilastro, a working-class neighborhood in Bologna. Video filmed by a neighbor shows at least two police officers pinning him to the ground as he calls for help and pleads for them to stop. Members of a medical response team can be seen standing nearby. The video rapidly spread on social media, prompting protests and demands for justice. Fakir’s relatives have called his death a “state assassination.” “They killed my brother in cold blood. I want justice,” said Khadija, the sister of Abderrahim Fakir. Social movements are demanding accountability for police violence, an end to racial profiling, and a stop to the militarization of working-class and migrant neighborhoods.

🇮🇹 Italy faces a potential "George Floyd moment" Migrant rights organizations and the far-left are starting to organize streets protests after a Moroccan migrant died while being pinned down to the ground by the police after going on rampage, destroying cars and threatening people on the streets of Bologna. Officers arriving used pepper spray on Fakir and pinned him to the asphalt to handcuff him. Viral footage shows Fakir struggling to breathe and yelling before losing consciousness. Paramedics were unable to revive him. Hundreds of migrants and far-left activists took to the streets in the Pilastro neighborhood on Sunday evening, chanting anti-police slogans and kneeling with raised fists — comparing the incident to the 2020 death of George Floyd. Italian left-leaning groups and Bologna’s center-left mayor, Matteo Lepore, backed the migrant protest. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government is defending the policemen, saying that the officers were simply doing their duty after having been called by “exasperated citizens.”

🇮🇹 Shocking video from Italy shows a 28-year-old Moroccan stabbing pedestrians, injuring two people in Bologna. The Moroccan was confronted by one hero, who came after the shirtless suspect with a half-broken crutch. As can be seen in the video, the Moroccan knocks the hero to the ground, and nearly stabs him to death with a knife before others intervene. The police arrived and hit the Moroccan with a taser and arrested him. The Moroccan was supposed to have already been deported, but was transferred to a repatriation center, and then released for unknown reasons. An "anti-fascist" group in Bologna wrote that the police "brutalized" the Moroccan by using a taser. “This is the condition to which all residents of Bologna are subjected, a true free-for-all zone where is directly threatened by scenes of violence and urban warfare,” said MEP Stefano Cavedagna of Fratelli d'Italia.
