Suresh Kumar from the Tondiarpet 2 depot, ensured her journey was smooth and safe by helping her onto the ramp and securing her wheelchair with a safety lock. Like Thiru. On Sunday afternoon, in a drive at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus in Malda, names, logos and stickers mimicking those of government buses were removed from several private buses. Many private buses were operating with colour schemes (blue and white) and names resembling those of the state transport corporation. The use of such colours and names was causing confusion among passengers, particularly women. Following an order from the state government, free travel for women on government buses was introduced on 1 June. However, due to the visual similarity between government and private buses, many female passengers were inadvertently boarding private buses and subsequently getting hassled. Some private buses were displaying names like NBTS, MBTSG, and MMT to mimic the name of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC). Additionally, the vehicles were painted blue and white, just like government buses. On Sunday afternoon, Anupam Chakraborty, the regional transport officer (RTO) of the district, arrived at the Gourkanya Bus Terminus with transport department staff. There, misleading logos and stickers were removed from several private buses. Furthermore, markings and text imitating the state transport corporation’s branding were painted over with black ink. Passengers expressed relief at this move by the transport department. They believe that a clear distinction between government and private buses will prevent future confusion and significantly reduce harassment, especially for female passengers. Maloy Karmakar, in charge of the Malda Depot of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation, stated that the blue-and-white colour scheme has been used on NBSTC buses for many years, and the colour of private buses is not within their jurisdiction. However, he noted that female passengers often ask if a bus is a government one; NBSTC buses are painted blue and white as per government regulations, while the RTO office would be the authority to speak on bus colour specifications.

Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Minister for Transport, said: “This week, we engaged with the GPRTU and other transport unions and visited key congested areas. More buses are being deployed, fares will be reduced, and 300 Metro Mass buses will soon join the system, with 100 arriving on 15 February and another 100 by April. Private investors are also supporting these efforts. We are committed to improving transport in Accra. Already, 15 buses have been repaired, and over 135 are operational. Very soon, the public will see the results of our hard work.”

This situation has been ongoing for some time. Buses operating in the Brits area of the North West Province have allegedly been subjected to continuous intimidation and interference by SANTACO-affiliated taxi operators. As a result, buses are often restricted to operating only during specific hours, leaving residents with limited transport options and forcing many commuters to rely on taxis and pay higher fares.

A Ghanaian woman voices her concern regarding the condition of certain commercial buses(Trotro), calling out the Road Safety, DVLA, and Ghana Police to address the issue of roadworthiness for these vehicles. This was after both the passengers and herself were completely soaked inside the commercial vehicle(Trotro) they boarded from Lapaz to Ashaiman during today's rains.

OAU transport system was near perfect, adequate buses and bikes, we rarely experienced queues until the First Lady came and decided she didn’t like the ease of transportation and introduced “change” by donating CNG buses. The school management in turn banned all motorcycles and commercial buses on campus and subjected over 30,000 students to just about 50 buses and a few tricycles. OAU has one of the largest land masses of any Nigerian university, yet students are now stranded daily. This is a Monday morning where students are supposed to rush for class, but they are stuck at the campus gate because of the inefficiency of the CNG buses. Students are struggling to go to class in the morning and in the evenings to even get back to their hostels. Students staying off campus now spend almost double to get to campus, all alternative transport means have been removed The management have cars to bypass all of this, but majority of students do not. Yet they released statements talking about how the buses will “ease transportation” and even implied students appreciate the system. Meanwhile, students are trekking, missing classes, and spending hours in queues. Let it be clear that students do not appreciate this system. It has made our lives harder, not better. What used to be a smooth system has now become a daily struggle. There are many pressing issues in this school, but they chose to dismantle a working transport system and replace it with hardship. We can no longer remain silent. Let the whole world know what OAU students are going through. Public transportation in NYC remains a disaster, and Hochul’s MTA raised fares in January. Mamdani promised “free buses,” yet endorsed Hochul who raised public transportation fares in January..? Explain how MTA will go from raising fares to making buses free? It’s all lies. Mass transit in New York is a disaster despite billions upon billions in spending. Riders are packed onto delayed buses. Trains are unreliable. Service gets cut. Fares go up. And the people paying the price are working families trying to get to work, school, and home safely. Wake up NYC- the people we rely on to make life better continue to lie, steal, and break promises.
