In January 1992, President George H.W. Bush was on a grueling 12-day trade mission through Asia. By the time he reached Tokyo, he was exhausted. Earlier that day, despite feeling under the weather, he had played a doubles tennis match against the Emperor of Japan and his son (which the President lost). That evening, during a televised state banquet with 135 diplomats at the Prime Minister’s residence, Bush suddenly turned pale. Between the second and third courses (specifically, between the salmon caviar and the beef), he leaned forward, turned to his left, and vomited directly onto the lap of Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. He then rolled under the table and fainted. The room went silent. In a moment of surprising tenderness amidst the chaos, Prime Minister Miyazawa didn't recoil; he actually cradled the President’s head in his arms until the Secret Service and First Lady Barbara Bush rushed in. Barbara calmly held a napkin to his mouth while agents jumped over the table to create a perimeter. Bush regained consciousness within minutes. He stood up, apologized to the room, and was helped out. The official diagnosis was acute gastroenteritis (stomach flu). The incident was replayed on television worldwide. In Japan, it famously entered the slang lexicon for a few years: the verb Busshu-suru (literally "to do a Bush") became a euphemism for vomiting in public.

This is one of my favorite anecdotes from this job. 36 years ago, President George HW Bush received the President of Bolivia, Jaime Paz (accompanied by his young sons) at the White House, and Paz gave Bush a golden family cross. Bush wrote Paz a characteristically gracious thank-you note and said that he would give instructions to return the family heirloom when one of the Paz boys became President. As fate would have it, one of them, Rodrigo Paz, was elected President of Bolivia last year. The Bush Library promptly contacted us, and yesterday in Doral Secretary Marco Rubio returned the cross to the new President Paz with a copy of the note. And the best part? President Rodrigo Paz was able to share this story with his now 86-year-old father. Kudos to all, especially the George H.W. Bush Library & Museum. Promises made, promises kept! 🇺🇸🤝🇧🇴

According to Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather is not really a story about the Mafia, but a story about American capitalism and succession. This is something he realized early on when reading Mario Puzo’s book for the second time… "Upon that second reading, much of the book fell away in my mind, revealing a story that was a metaphor for American capitalism in the tale of a great king with three sons: the oldest was given his passion and aggressiveness, the second his sweet nature and childlike qualities, and the third, his intelligence, cunning, and coldness. Suddenly I saw the story as one of succession of power." What he discovered was that the same three qualities that made Vito so formidable as a mafia boss - his aggression, his compassion, his strategic cunning - were unevenly distributed amongst his three sons, and their fatal flaw was that each son had a deficit of the other two qualities. Sonny embodied Vito’s passion and impulsive aggression, which led to his violent and short-lived leadership. Fredo reflected Vito’s familial warmth but lacked strength, resulting in his weakness and ultimate betrayal. And Michael inherited Vito’s most powerful quality, his calculated, strategic intelligence - which propelled him to power but ultimately left him cruel, heartless - and estranged him from his family. This “king-and-three-sons” concept became the unifying principle, and it influenced almost every decision that went into making the film. It was through this central concept that Coppola was able to tell a story - not just about the mafia - but about America, and its relationship with capitalism.
