Seven of the strait’s eight major islands are Iranian. They're unsinkable missile platforms and bases parked directly over the only navigable corridor on earth that handles 20% of global oil. Flight time for a sea-skimming cruise missile from Qeshm to a loaded supertanker: under two minutes. Which is why the Kharg Island plan is a suicidal fantasy. Taking Kharg even if you could do it, does nothing to the strait. Iran doesn’t need Kharg to control Hormuz. It's a strawman to say that skeptics of Iranians abiding by the MOU want a massive ground operation. President Trump has threatened to seize Kharg Island (that would be boots of the ground) and there are MEUs ready for the kinds of missions to seize key islands. And we DID have boots on the ground to rescue the downed airmen. What I want is to achieve the President's goals.

It's a strawman to say that skeptics of Iranians abiding by the MOU want a massive ground operation. Mace: I was not convinced when I walked out of there that troops on the ground were necessary to declare victory. I believe President Trump can declare victory now. I have a hard time understanding what Kharg Island has to do with some of our objectives and thinking through and wargaming through what the consequences of taking Kharg Island might mean. It might mean that there are entire countries in the Middle East that don't have water We're doing all of this with the knowledge that Russia is aiding Iran. China is aiding Iran. And so, you know, to do this in a more protracted manner, to put troops on the ground, then they're going to have to come to congress and convince us that it is the right thing to do.
