It was encouraging to see Oregon’s Supreme Court focused on the original intent of Oregon’s right to bear arms. This was a large improvement from the questions that were asked at the Court of Appeals level. “The people shall have the right to bear arms for the defence (sic) of themselves, and the State, but the Military shall be kept in strict subordination to the civil power[.]” Oregon Constitution Article I, Section 27.

We have always been the leader when it comes to liberty. 206 years later, in 1982, a supermajority of Granite Staters approved article 2-a of the Constitution. It reads that “all persons have the right to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves, their families, their property, and the state.” Right now, UNH and other public universities are infringing on the self defense rights of law abiding college students.

Some of the things we take for granted as core to the Constitution—it’s right in there, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment—the word “amendment” means it wasn’t even in the original text. Amendments have always been a critically important part of how our Constitution is supposed to work. We just forgot about it. We amended our Constitution for prohibition. We changed our Constitution so you couldn’t have a beer. And then we thought that’s a bad idea, and we changed it back. Don’t tell me we can’t change the Constitution to get money out of politics.
