That’s a lot of people whose job is “who plays if X goes down.” They draft backups on purpose (see McCaffrey’s committee). They sign vets who have injury flags and keep adding behind them. They are still the most-injured team in the league. They just refuse to call Chuck Clark a superpower and go home. What Detroit has • Brad Holmes — GM. Draft-first, “we like the guys we have.” • Dan Campbell — HC, culture, and he signs off on the room. • A much thinner public personnel tree. The process is those two plus scouting. That’s not automatically stupid. It becomes stupid when both starting safeties are PUP, Arnold is gone, and the plan is veterans plus quotes. The real difference isn’t foresight magic SF assumes the starter gets hurt. So they pay for the next two. They’ll still reach out midseason (they’ve already been in on extra pass rush). Detroit assumes the culture and the 2023 core will hold. So they extend their own guys, sell Clark/Maddox, and talk fundamentals in Week 3. Lynch/Shanahan have been together since 2017. They’ve lived a decade of IR lists. Their “foresight” is scar tissue plus a deep staff that is allowed to keep spending on the next man.
