OVERCOACHING 👎 When in played in Europe I was speaking with the GM of my team and discussion some of the former coaches they had at the club. We got to an American Coach they had and he said ‘typical American coach, he overcoached the whole game’. I’m not saying I agree with this, but it made me think about the role of a coach and how too much talking/coaching can hinder performance and development. I am still not great at it, but try to be mindful of how and what I say. One of the best attributes a coach can have is learning when to ‘stay out of the way’ of their players.

There is a misconception that being a great football PLAYER makes you a great football COACH. Being a great coach requires a lifetime of work and dedication to making it up the field. The same is required of a player, but it is an entirely different skillset, and the genetics lottery plays a factor as well. There is a reason Deion Sanders will never be as good a coach as Curt Cignetti; the two have spent their adult lives focusing on two different things.

If you’re one of the people who think what happened yesterday is okay or “he deserved it” you’re a sick person, and need help. How about you stop being a vile human being and start doing what you can to make this a better country instead of thinking it relies on who is/is not our President. Participate in American democracy or continue to be the reason it is no longer.

YOUR ROLE It’s hard for players when their role is not what they want or expected. Not only is it a physical adjustment, but it’s a mental one as well. In-Season, your job is simple, do what is asked of you and do it to the best of your ability. On great teams, great coaches help players become stars in their role, on bad teams, coaches don’t define roles or don’t help players maximize their role. No matter what situation a player is in, lock in on starting in your role, then put in extra work in season and in the off season to expand that role!

This umpire called a ball that the defensive team thought was a strike. The coach called a timeout after the walk and gathered his infield on the mound. On the next pitch, the catcher slid to the right out of the way of the ball making no attempt to catch it and let it drill the umpire right in the mask. Umpires are fallible human beings. Bad call? Maybe it was. But intentionally letting the ball hit him is poor sportsmanship, dangerous and has no place in the game. The coach, pitcher and catcher should all be ejected from the game. Heck, I might just call the game if I was the umpire and if that is what you are teaching your players, maybe that coach should never be allowed to coach again. What would you do if you were the umpire? How about if it was your child pitching or catching? And what are you saying to the coach if he was the coach of your team?

COACHES SOLVING THEIR TEAMS PUZZLE As fans, trainers, parents, players we underestimate how much of a process it is for coaches to figure out their teams puzzle. There are so many variables that go in to a team having success and the only way to get to that end goal is by losing and making mistakes along the way. No team is perfect, no coach is perfect, but give me a coach that is constantly fighting for their team and I’ll rock with them all day!!
