I was thinking just this last night. The number of pucks he took back and the number of disruptions was phenomenal. Everything is easier in your OZ. If you lose the puck, take it back before they get outside the blue line. P.S. Naysayers…97 does play D.

COACHES: For a lot of goals, you can rewind the clip back 10-15 seconds and you'll see some sort of effort or buy in play to win possession or get the puck back. I would show these clips to our players and call them "Effort Before Offense" plays. This goal from Vegas is a perfect example. Holtz explodes off the puck drop and wins possession for the team even though the puck gets "won" to Anaheim's side. Great effort, detail play. Then their star play in Jack Eichel wins a foot-race and battle to the puck in the offensive zone setting up Barbashev for the goal. Two great effort plays leading to the goal and a great clip to show your teams!!

COACHES: If you want to play aggressive with your D down the wall in the offensive zone, it's massively important that you have a great F3. Here is a great example from FLA - Ekblad gets down the wall tight and above the winger creating the turnover while Reinhart backs him up as F3 in the middle. Offensively in these situations, by being aggressive with your D you keep so many more pucks in the zone extending your ozone time. The D gapped hard on the opposing winger either takes away that option or creates a turnover if that winger is passed the puck. And often...it's F3 that becomes open after the turnover as you see with Reinhart on this play. Defensively, a great F3 limits the opposing team from getting odd-man rushes the other way. I love the aggressiveness this structure provides a team - it's a great identity tactic for teams that want to be hard to play against. Great job here by FLA!!

COACHES: Are you practicing breakouts from your Dzone coverage? This is a great clip from DET on the value of playing FAST in transition from the Dzone. The outnumber the puck down low to create the turnover and then BOOM watch how fast they go north once they get the puck. This is a phenomenal identity clip to show your team if you want to be a team that's dangerous in transition. Great job!!

COACHES: This is a great teaching clip for an extremely underrated concept in hockey that we need to be talking about more: Beat your man up the ice. Watch Hoglander chip the puck around Bouchard off the draw and beat him up ice to get rewarded with the goal. It's like he's shot out of a cannon. Bouchard needs to get a piece of him at the blueline but Hoglander does a great job side-stepping and then really getting on his horse to win the race to the net. The game is all about races and battles. They happen all over the ice. This is a great clip demonstrating the importance of winning those races and beating your opponent up ice.

COACHES: If we want to develop better hockey players, we need to talk more about work AWAY FROM THE PUCK. Here are two clips to show your players on this concept. 1. GIVE-AND-GO: One of my favorite youth coaches was from Russia and Tarasov's school of hockey...and his biggest pet peeve was passing and then not moving. He would literally stop practice and make us do a somersault if we passed and stood still. Our team won a national championship, we had half our team play college hockey, and his emphasis on this I think was a huge part of our development. Why is a give-and-go big? When a defender is on you and you pass it, that split second is when they're most vulnerable. They have to look at where the puck goes but also pay attention to you. By moving right away after passing, their attention shifts, even so briefly, which allows you to get open to get it back. Check out this AMAZING give-and-go between McDavid and Draisaitl. These guys are on another level and McDavid is truly superhuman at working away from the puck. 2. WORK TO SUPPORT THE PUCK: On the second clip, watch how hard Tarasenko speeds through the neutral zone to get to a spot of support. If he doesn't, this play ends in a dump in and an easy breakout. But he hightails it, like he's shot out of a cannon, and even though he doesn't get the puck, his speed without the puck allows him to get pressure on the forecheck. 3. WORK TO GET THE PUCK BACK: Then you have Kaprizov, one of the most skilled players in the world, working to track back on the forecheck. His effort helps create the turnover and he gets rewarded with the goal. If you want to play offense, the harder you work away from the puck defensively, the more you'll benefit offensively by getting possession back. Even the best players in the world only have the puck on their stick for maybe one minute during a game. As coaches and in player development, the more we can emphasize play without the puck, the more we'll develop smarter and better players.

Great shoulder checks from D1 going back to get the puck on first touch, and then he activates up ice on the weak side. Great surf and defensive stick to force the dump from D2 - and then close support as D1 had heavy pressure. He's also shoulder checking. Great use of body to shield the puck from pinching D and outlet to C from the RW. Great low and slow support from the C behind the puck. Great job by the LW stretching out the opposing D creating the lane and space for D1 coming up the ice. Everyone shoulder checking. Everyone working to get up ice after their puck touch. If you go back and watch each player in this clip individually, it's beautiful. All of these little things add to a great breakout sequence that starts the play for the goal. An incredible clip to show your teams!!

KIDS: When you lose the puck, how hard are you willing to work to get it back? As a coach, I want you to make plays. I want you to be creative. I want you to play with no fear of making mistakes. The only stipulation I have is that when you try to make a play and you turn it over, you have to work like hell to get it back. Here's a great example from a team that MAKES A LOT OF PLAYS. Tampa turns it over in the Ozone and then watch the effort from the players to get it back. Hounds. They create another turnover and then get rewarded in transition. COACHES: Here is a GREAT teaching clip of something I see in youth hockey all the time. A player will skate the puck towards one of their teammates and will then pass it to them. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in the game. When you skate the puck towards your teammate, you're effectively bringing defenders towards them too so when you give them the puck you've put them in a difficult spot because now with more defenders near they have less time and space to make a play. This clip is a great example. The CHI defenseman skates the puck toward his partner and then tries to give him a pass. They turn the puck over with two CAR forecheckers now right there and the puck ends up in the back of the net. In youth hockey you see defenseman do this a lot and even more so they'll skate it towards their winger and then give them the puck either on the breakout or in the neutral zone. A better solution would be to move it right away or suck defenders towards you (and away from) your teammate so when you pass to them they'll have more time and space. Phenomenal teaching clip on time and space!!

Yesterday I posted that the Flyers' 4th line all deserved assists on this goal by Porter Martone. Here's why: This is the game within the game. They're matched up here against Malkin's line and they spend the entire shift in the Ozone. Winning races and battles for pucks, wearing them out with possession forcing them to have to defend the entire shift. Selflessly changing in the offensive zone to get their top line out there against a tired Malkin line who eventually scores the opening goal. They played their role perfectly. Just look at the hard work and compete. They get an offensive line for the Pens to have to play in the Dzone for an extended period of time. And set the table for their own offensive line coming out next to do their thing. Amazing TEAM hockey for the game winning goal. The 4th line didn't get actual assists on the scoresheet, but you better believe they'll be on the team video for their effort in the morning.

Watch Leon Draisaitl's effort on this play to win the puck battle. He's one of the smartest, most skilled players in the world...but he's not leading the NHL in goals or helping lead the Oilers to a Stanley Cup final without this grit. If your best players are your most competitive and hardest workers, you'll have a recipe for success. Coaches, this is a great clip to show your teams. Great job from Draisaitl!!
