🔥 COACHING INSIGHT FROM GERMANY 🇩🇪 Something really interesting we noticed from Pep Lijnders coaching on Tuesday. Runs beyond in the half spaces. He explained that the run is there to offer an option for a through pass. But there is another layer. When those runs are made diagonally,...

🔴 Take 30 seconds to read and understand this Liverpool positional practice under Andoni Iraola. We’ve seen this practice shared on other pages who try to replicate what we do, but the explanations have been wrong. First of all, this is a 6v5 positional practice, not 6v6 or 5v5. In the first zone, the practice is played as a 5v4 and within an area 16(L) x 28(W) Yards. The players are deliberately positioned to replicate: ▪️ Two centre backs on the end line (They can step in) ▪️ Two inverted wide players ▪️ One central pivot ▪️ Two mini goals representing players between the lines AKA number 10 positions. The top zone is then played as a 1v1. The practice is designed to recreate central overloads when Liverpool have controlled possession in the opposition half, that's why it is setup in that part of the pitch, again deliberately so. The 1v1 represents a potential moment when an opposition centre back steps forward to track a player receiving between the lines, and spaces appear to run into. This creates an important decision for the team in possession. After completing a set number of passes, can they: ⚽ Play into a mini goal (10 positions between lines), for one point? Or… ⚽ Release the attacker with a well timed forward pass beyond for two points if a goal is scored? The attacker must remain onside, angle their run beyond the defender and finish into either target goal. If the pressing team regains possession, their objective is to attack quickly and score in transition into the mini target goals just beyond the halfway line. The purpose of the practice is to develop pictures, connections and decisions when dominating possession high up the pitch. Can we play through the opposition when the space is available, or play beyond them when they step forward? From there, the coaching principles begin: ✅ Play forward when it’s on ✅ Recognize when to play through or beyond ✅ Maintain positional connections ✅ React immediately in transition And so on! That’s session planning, and a real insight into the detail behind the practice. Save this for your next session and follow us for more ⚽ #FootballCoaching #SoccerCoaching #PositionalPlay #LiverpoolFC #AndoniIraola #CoachDevelopment #FootballTactics #SoccerDrills #FootballTraining

Hexagons and Octagons Those who follow football and coaching will be well aware that there are trends that emerge and become the great break through in coaching, only to vanish quite quickly. A few stick around and become a staple. Such as the rondo, or the 4v4+4 Guardiola rondo variation. One that did not stick around in the coaching collective consciousness that possible should have was Thomas Tuchel’s use of hexagonal and octagonal playing areas in training sessions. Tuchel explained that cutting off the corners and angling the pitch forced “sharp diagonal” passes that would help break the press. The positioning of players outside the hexagon/octagon or players close to the edges will be manipulated into an open body shape by the angles of the pitch. Players are impacted by environmental constraints and embodied cognition, where the geography of the playing area influences their actions. This influence spreads to the creation of triangles and diamonds within the playing area due to the “funnel” like nature of the playing area. We can use the cut outside angles by placing bounce or target players on the exterior, influencing the movement and organisation internally. The inside players will not have to move wide as those areas are occupied. The internal players will seek to create passing angles using the positioning of the outside players and their internal team mates. The diamonds and triangles will appear. If we leave the spaces on the outside empty players can move to fill the spaces. These act as free spaces to receive from the goalkeeper or open spaces for attackers to overlap into, encouraging attacking combination play and crosses. A different way of using the space is to remove goals and goalkeepers from the ends and place bounce/target players on the outside. Players now can combine with the outside players, when they do so they are then free to finish into the outside goals. The condition can be extended to combining with the target player in the opposite side of the pitch before scoring, adding an element of switching play. The hexagon and octagon are versatile spaces that help to replicate aspects of the game. By funneling the spaces we impact players body shape, ability to play forward quickly, team shape (or small group shapes), players cutting in, defending centrally, the types of combination used and the angles of line breaking pass (diagonals). The angles are hugely significant for teams that value combinations and possession football, Straight passes and receiving angles are much easier to intercept and carry high risks for being counter attacked. Short diagonals can bypass players and attacking shapes, creating angled connections. If an angles pass is given away there is still a risk of being counter attacked but there is more chance of having players around the ball to regain possession. To counter press. The question that emerges is should we then be using hexagons and octagons more? If they are of greater benefit than squares and rectangles, why use them? Should all pitches, including those of a small sided nature be hexagonal? Can the rondo square be replaced by the rondo octagon?

"There are two types of coaches, those who do nothing and those who do a lot of damage. I prefer to be one of those who do nothing. The game belongs to the players, always ⚽. You can introduce them to a certain strategy that we have to implement, and they have to be convinced that they can do it. Then, there is the quality of the player, there is the attitude, the commitment. What a coach can do is make the players understand what teamwork is 🤝. Because we have the quality, Bayern Munich has it, Paris Saint Germain has it. Where is the difference? Where do you want to put this quality? If you want to put it in for yourself, it's not right ❌. If you put it in for the team, you can win 🏆."

Roberto De Zerbi is one of the best coaches on the planet 🧠⚽ He is crystal clear about what he wants, then turns those ideas into simple, repeatable solutions for his players. At the weekend, De Zerbi was coaching his double pivot during build up against a press led by a single centre forward. The key detail, the pivots must remain staggered. As the ball travels across to the opposite centre back, the opposition number 10 jumps to press. In doing so, the number 10 blocks the passing lane into one pivot as he moved. But the staggered positioning in the pivot positions creates the solution, the ball side pivot stays behind the first line of pressure. The opposite pivot drops at an angle to receive. A passing lane opens around the pressing player who jumps to press. The team escapes pressure and progresses through the centre. Giving players clear pictures, reference points and solutions they can recognize under pressure. You see the detail coached in training. Then you see it appear in the game. That is how effective coaching improves or aids decision making, problem solving and confidence in possession. Save this for and follow us for more. More available on our website.

Day one of Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur is in the books, and a couple of small moments already say a lot about how meticulous he is. No matter how minor or major the situation, he coaches what the game presents. The first example came when he approached Dominic Solanke. During a small sided game, Solanke was using constant movement, checking runs and changing direction to create space. When play paused, De Zerbi stepped in to explain that in tight areas, locking/shielding the defender directly can actually create more space surrounding him to receive, without needing movement. It sounds simple, but if it needs coaching, he addresses it immediately and with intent. The moments of when to move vs when to lock on! The second moment highlighted his well known focus on tempo. He urged calm from defenders when they had an overload, encouraging them to slow things down just enough to ensure accurate distribution. That patience also allows the structure ahead of the ball to take shape and for movement to develop, leading to more controlled and progressive possession. When the moment is right tempo speeds up to progress the play! The detail stands out. If it's detail and energy Tottenham wanted, Roberto De Zerbi will 100% bring that.

José Mourinho comments on strict tactical philosophies and adapting to the players. "For me it's wrong to be tied to one philosophy. One thing is for a coach to say what is ideal. I also have my ideal, and I built my ideal team when I could. But it's important for a coach to adapt to what he has. I love seeing a quality full-back coming inside to create superiority in midfield, but how many can do it? I love Hakimi projecting on the attack, attacking on the inside and scoring lots of goals when the winger is wide. Do I like that? No, I love that! But there aren't many Hakimis." Can you explain what is the big benefit from that? "A lot of things. For example, if the full-back attacks on the inside and the opposite winger tracks him back, you can have a wide winger on a 1 vs 1 situation. But a thing is to create 1 vs 1 scenarios with a winger that smashes it, another is to create a 1 vs 1 scenario with Cândido Costa (interviewer)." 😂

Stop scrolling and just take 20 seconds to read this. Then share it with development coaches! We’ve translated the lip reading from this excellent insight between Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni and central midfielder Leandro Paredes. So many coaches try to control everything. Scaloni does something different. He listens. He includes. Then he manages the situation around what his players see, feel and need on the pitch. In this clip, Paredes explains that he is struggling to progress the ball because the opposition number nine is starting close to him and blocking the passing lanes based on the angles of support Paredes offers from central areas. His solution? He needs an extra centre back so one of them can step forward. That will either allow the centre backs to build the play themselves, or attract the number nine towards them, freeing Paredes to receive in space and take control of the game. He asks Scaloni to introduce an extra centre back to support that build up, believing it is the best way for Argentina to regain and retain control of the game. Scaloni listens, and immediately begins working on the solution. Throughout the World Cup, the cameras repeatedly captured Lionel Messi discussing on field problems with Scaloni and explaining how he believed they could be solved. That is not a weakness in the manager. That is leadership. Empowering others making them feel more attached to the objective. An environment where players are included in the planning. Not robots blindly following instructions. Footballers. THINKERS. DECISION MAKERS. THIS IS FOOTBALL, Decision makers! Develop decision makers. Get instructive control freaks out of development football!! The game is a constant series of problems and decisions. If players are always waiting for answers from the sideline, they will never reach their full potential, individually or collectively. Coach the player. Develop the thinker.

One of the most interesting build up concepts we saw last season came from Elche in Spain. 🇪🇸 From both goal kicks and open play, Elche manipulated the positioning of their first line to create space for the centre backs to step forward, both with and without the ball. Rather than simply circulating possession across the back line, the objective was to provoke pressure, identify the free centre back and create opportunities for them to carry the ball forward or step beyond the opposition’s first line. The detail is in how the space is created before the player arrives. At Keepitonthedeck, we pride ourselves on producing world class tactical analysis that coaches can actually use. the camera being in a tight close up on both ilya and shane for the entirety of this scene, except for the moment when ilya is working up the courage to say he’s in love. it’s like for the whole conversation it’s just the two of them, there’s nobody else who matters, and then for a brief moment the shot widens as ilya considers the implications of the fact he’s in love with shane. the fact that the rest of the world DOES matter and will always be a presence in their relationship. we’ve been held in this moment between the two of them and by widening the shot, that intimacy is broken just for a second as we’re reminded that there is a world beyond the two of them and ilya is still in russia. what he’s doing is incredibly dangerous. then the camera tightens back into a close up as he realises he needs to say it anyway because all that matters is that he’s on the phone with shane and he’s in love with him. it really is just the two of them in this moment and he doesn’t want to let anyone else in.

Diomande - Runs Beyond & In-Behind Yes, everyone knows Diomande is my "Hill to Die On" & we can argue all-day whether he is a 6/8/10 but that sometimes doesn't matter. His real quality and difference he brings to our team is stretching the game: - Runs Beyond Forwards with Goal Threat - Underlaps FB's and Wingers Creating Space In Scotland, yes, it's probably harder to get the runs beyond but underlapping runs are a must and he will do them game after game. Get behind him because i believe this is one of our keys to any success

OK SO FINALLY I have a means to show you what I have been saying for a while.......Watch this clip, share it, so people understand what we are saying here!!! In this Clip, JLR© is having a discussion with Watching the World , and we get to see that front door lock!! Here is what I have been saying.....The Front door is a material called EXPANDED METAL, YOU CAN SEE THROUGH IT. The Door IS a Security Door, that you would have to cut through with two locks. A Lock that can be unlocked via a key on the handle, and a DEADbolt lock that would be locked on the inside of the door. This PREVENTS someone from being able to attack you when you OPEN the HOUSE door that is inside it, and behind this screen door. That door only opens when that deadbolt is unlocked from inside! ALso notice we see NO damage to the door or frame in this video!!

The build-up to Kaizer Chiefs’ second goal is a perfect example of why having a profile capable of functioning between the lines is so important when trying to create bigger attacking moments. Baartman was making the forward runs to support Ighodaro as the 9 and add numbers into the box, but Chiefs lacked enough presence between the lines to combine, manipulate and disrupt Sekhukhune’s defensive block. For long stretches, we were reduced to harmless circulation despite controlling possession. A 10’s willingness to occupy those spaces and half-spaces forces defenders into difficult decisions. Look at the sequence leading to the second goal: ■ First, Phili and Nkgwesa combine to connect with Mdu, who receives between the lines, turns and immediately looks for a penetrative pass. It is intercepted, but the intention is clear. ■ Seconds later, Mdu makes the same movement again into space. This time, the CB follows him, leaving space behind the defensive line. Mdu spins into that space, Ndlovu recognises it and threads a perfectly weighted through ball. Mdu gets in behind and finishes calmly. That is the value of using space intelligently. But, most importantly, the quality of finishing is very important because all this won't matter if we do not finish the chances we create. Mdu didn’t need to touch the ball repeatedly to influence the attack. His movement alone manipulated the defensive structure, created separation and opened the kind of penetration Chiefs had lacked for long periods against Sekhukhune. Possession gives you control. But occupying the right spaces gives you access to the goal. We need to improve this balance📝

🗣️ Mikel Arteta on if it's important to keep players from the academy: "Certainly. I mean, the players that have been raised in our system and they feel generally that love and that connection with the club, it brings something else. "There is no question about that, and we need to look after them in a really special way because they bring value that is very difficult to find. That's why, when we can, we want to protect those assets as much as possible, develop them and make them extremely important for the club." 🗣️ on sending players on loan to Premier League clubs: "I think those are individual cases. Those players have to be ready as well to compete in the Premier League and to play regularly. "The priority is to expose those players and give them minutes, you better agree that that's going to be the case, and how many clubs, teams, managers in this league can guarantee that that's going to happen to a really young player that probably hasn't had exposure. "If you find it, great, because that's the level that we want them to compete. But sometimes they need a different pathway. The beauty of this is that the pathway can be completely different and the outcome can be the same, and this is the magic of football as well."

Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell - Coaching the Coaches - "I try to coach the coaches. No different than you do the players." - "If there is something that I feel like you need to do better or you need to work on.... Or I love what you're doing, keep doing it. I'm going to let them know that. I don't shy away from that because to me that helped me as a young coach." Preparing Coordinators for Head Coaching Jobs - "I did this with Ben and AG both, give them insight into what I do (Roster/Transactions). - In game situational perspective from the opposite side of the ball. "I try to let them in and coach them as much as I can on that before they get their opportunity."
