Coby Mayo Outlier Bat Path Mayo has the most pull-side Attack Direction in the MLB He also has one of the most vertical Bat Paths — a very unique combination 🧵Some relatively simple adjustments could significantly reduce his whiffs & ks

Mayo possesses tremndous power & his batted balls stack up with virtually any hitter in baseball A few main factors have kept him from entering the upper echelon of hitters: • High Ks • Low BBs • Relative struggles vs RHP Adjusting his path would address both Ks & RHPs

Mayo's path is truely an outlier His Direction isn't a product of making contact out front (as is typical for other pull-oriented paths) — his entire path is simply more oriented towards LF than any other hitter in the MLB Some background info on VBA & Direction

This creates issues While Mayo has performed better vs LHPs than RHPs across the board, he's particularly struggled w RH Breaking Balls This makes sense: since his barrel is working aggressively to the pull-side, he often runs out of barrel vs pitches breaking away from him

This struggle also might impact his performance against FBs On inner 3rd FBs, Mayo's avg POC is 6" deeper (& Swing Length is ~4" shorter) vs RHPs than vs LHPs Trying to track the pitch longer to cover the breaker would explain this

Why is Mayo's path so pull-oriented? He is typically very open @ contact — especially compared to similarly vertical hitters Being less open will shift his orientation & his Direction will be more oppo

A simple starting point in training to make this adjustment is altering the angle of both the incoming pitch (offset machine) and the hitter (ex Offset Open)

Mayo's batted balls are extremely productive Adjusting his path would allow him to cover more pitches, and in turn increase how many BIPs he can produce

Why change anything, if anything vs righty’s go up bat Sz by a inch and stand on top of plate , I would bet that the club wants him to pull ball in the air
