Cliff Burton created the distorted bass introduction using effects that made his instrument sound almost unrecognisable, giving Metallica one of the most distinctive openings in their catalogue. The lyrics drew inspiration from Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name, particularly its depiction of death during the Spanish Civil War. Fifteen years after the song appeared on Ride the Lightning, Metallica brought it to Woodstock ’99, where its slow, crushing weight sounded built for a crowd of that enormous scale.
