Color-coding the engine config according to startup/shutdown sequences REALLY shows the impact of that single engine on the entire booster. 3 other engines failed to fully light before the energetic event.

The hot-staging into boost-back during Flight 12 was pretty chaotic so I decided to try to simplify what occurred by looking at the visuals and the telemetry. This is my take and the engines that failed to light or shutoff could be wrong. I am open to corrections. Booster 19 had failed to light some of its engines at the start of its boost-back before experiencing an energetic event in the inner engines that knocked out surrounding engines. E5 or E6 may be the culprit as E7 eventually relit during the landing burn.

There is a long checklist of items to go through before you get to hit the starter, so this clip is just the fun part. The engines are labeled engine #1 (left) and engine #2 (right). The first engine is started off the 24volt battery of the aircraft and the starter is released one the compressor reaches 55%. Once the first engine is up and running with the generator turned on, it makes the second engine spool up much quicker, as is has very little load to work against with the blades already turning at 85% rotor speed by this point. On odd calendar days we start engine number 1 first, and number 2 on even days. This is done to lessen the chance of us wearing out one engine more than the other. B212’s are intensive on maintenance, so each machine is dispatched with an engineer to oversee the maintenance. Former Captain Gaurav Taneja gave 8 reasons why Air India crash was not a pilot error: He explained that both the engines of AI171 had already failed before the fuel was cut off. The pilots then CUT OFF the fuel and restarted it again, which is a standard procedure to reignite the engines during engine failure. The pilots did everything they could to save the aircraft till the very end.
