🚨 CUAD Has Been Around for Nearly a Decade. Columbia’s “Illegal Name Use” Line Does Not Add Up. Universities love to dismiss activist brands as “unaffiliated,” but the record is messier. Columbia has suspended and expelled dozens of students tied to protests organized under the CUAD umbrella, yet enforcement is uneven. A few days ago, New York State Supreme Court vacated Columbia’s disciplinary findings and sanctions for 22 Hamilton Hall occupiers, calling the determinations “arbitrary and capricious” and sending the cases back to the university. And CUAD is not remotely new. By the organizers’ own account, the Columbia University Apartheid Divest Coalition dates to 2016, built by SJP and JVP for divestment referendums, went dormant after 2020, then reappeared after SJP and JVP were suspended in November 2023. Now Columbia is making student groups sign statements saying they are not affiliated with CUAD. Fine. But this is what it looks like when a university deals in good faith with bad faith actors: paperwork becomes a loophole, not a boundary. Suspend one label, revive another, keep the same network. (As you saw in the clip!) If CUAD is “illegal,” treat it like it. Send a cease and desist. Demand takedowns and platform records. Identify who is operating the accounts. Otherwise, “illegal name use” is just smoke, and nobody is held accountable.
