Standing in downtown Truckee at 5,817 feet and this is where the Sierra snowfall story really comes into focus. This storm is measured in feet, not inches: Higher elevations of the High Sierra: 6+ feet Donner Pass (7,056 ft): 5 to 6 feet Soda Springs (6,752 ft): 4 to 5 feet Truckee: 2 to 4 feet That’s just over a 1,200-foot climb up I-80, and it nearly doubles the snow totals from town to the summit. For perspective, Truckee averages about 17 feet in an entire winter. Storm cycles like this can deliver a big part of that in just a few days, and this is exactly how the Sierra builds its snowpack. NEW: Resident in Pennsylvania is reporting “Snow that looks, feels and sounds like styrofoam” He shows you multiple areas of the snow and it’s all the same, this stuff needs to be sent off to be tested One explanation for this is that it could be what called ‘Graupel Snow’ which is both denser and more granular than ordinary snow and looks similar to this but that doesn’t explain the feel of styrofoam being reported or the sound of styrofoam being reported by the resident Graupel Snow is essentially snow hail
