Our team just flew back from Palau, a tiny island nation at the forefront of Chinese Communist Party gray zone warfare operations. You may have never heard of it. But perhaps you might recognize the name of one of its islands: Peleliu. In 1944, this tiny island became the site of one of the bloodiest, most brutal battles of the entire Pacific theater. American Marines fought for every inch of territory against a dug-in Japanese defense. Thousands died. Eighty years later, Palau appears to be on the front line again. It sits along the second island chain, the string of Pacific territory that would be critical in any CCP Taiwan invasion scenario. And Palau is one of only twelve countries that still diplomatically recognizes Taiwan. Beijing has spent years picking that number off, one country at a time — the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Nauru — flipping Pacific nations with cash, infrastructure deals, and pressure. Palau is one of the last holdouts. On top of that, Palau has something almost no other country has: a Compact of Free Association with the United States. It's an extraordinary agreement. Palau gives the U.S. exclusive military access to its waters, and in exchange, America provides defense, postal service, economic assistance, and more. Only three nations in the world have this deal with Washington. Palau is one of them. And that’s exactly why the U.S. military is now building radar installations on the island and why Chinese pressure campaigns have ramped up. In this episode, I sit down with the President of Palau, Surangel Whipps Jr. Half-American, half-Palauan, and born in Baltimore, Whipps actually gave up his U.S. citizenship to become President of his father's homeland. This is a fascinating conversation with a man leading his country, building a Palauan Dream for his people, and fighting for his country’s sovereignty despite powerful interests ever-encroaching on his island.
