🔱 Dominic Canzone Long Post 🔱 When the Mariners acquired Canzone last month in exchange for Paul Sewald, most people had never really heard of him. He wasn’t a top prospect and he wasn’t lighting the world on fire. Here’s a quick recap on his numbers with Triple-A Reno this season: .354 AVG, .431 OBP, .634 SLG, 13.2 K% 12.8 BB%, .449 wOBA, 16 HR, 150 wRC+ Canzone never had a wRC+ lower than 107 at any stop in the minor leagues and for his entire minor league career, he had a .933 OPS with a wRC+ of 134. He can hit. Of course, minor league numbers ultimately mean next to nothing once you get to the major leagues. Arizona called him up in July and started playing nearly every day, mostly as a platoon bat. Here are his numbers as a Diamondback: .237 AVG, .293 OBP, .368 SLG, 19.5 K% 4.9 BB%, .290 wOBA, 1 HR, 80 wRC+ Not all that great, and that’s what most people saw when Seattle acquired him for their star reliever. Here were his expected stats: .283 AVG, .336 OBP, .476 SLG .353 xwOBA, 90.3 MPH Average Exit Velo That .353 xwOBA is better than Justin Turner, Josh Naylor, Francisco Lindor, Jake Burger, and many other players. When Canzone arrived to Seattle, he struggled in his first 20 plate appearances and his expected numbers weren’t much better either. His average exit velocity in this stretch was 85.2 MPH. His K% hit 20%, which Canzone had only had 2 lengthy stops in the minors where his K% was 20%. People were frustrated at the lack of production from Canzone (and Rojas). Ever since that slow stretch, in where he’s accrued 50 plate appearances, his stats: .283 AVG, .340 OBP, .478 SLG, 12.0 K% 8.0 BB%, .352 wOBA, 2 HR, 129 wRC+ These numbers are very similar to his expected numbers when he was with Arizona. Here’s the best part: his expected stats during this stretch are MUCH better. .329 AVG, .382 OBP, .598 SLG .418 xwOBA, 90.2 MPH Average Exit Velo That .418 xwOBA, if had over a full season, would rank 6th in all of baseball behind Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuna Jr., Corey Seager, Shohei Ohtani, and Yordan Alvarez. Obviously the samples on all of these stretches aren’t the biggest, but Canzone is a hitter. He’s hit everywhere he’s been and his underlying numbers have backed it up, outside of a short slump once he arrived to the Mariners. Many people didn’t give Canzone a chance when he first got here because of who we gave up to get him. People labeled him a “AAAA hitter” before seeing him. Time will tell what Canzone ends up becoming, but his future looks bright. Enjoy this Dominic Canzone moonshot.

𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚋𝚢 True Pitch Mounds Saydel’s Brady Hicks (2027, Prep Baseball Uncommitted) already has an impressive pedigree. The now six-foot-five right-hander has already experienced the Junior Future Games (2023) and Super Sophomore Games (2024), and if all goes well this spring, he should be in consideration for this year’s Future Games team. Ranked 3rd in the state and 192nd nationally, Hicks has a frame that oozes projection with a quick, compact arm stroke into a three-quarter slot. He hides the ball well and has the arm speed that allows his fastball to get on hitters quickly. Some of his heaters run arm-side more than others, and the ones that do give right-handed hitters issues. The fastball has been up to 88.8 MPH on Trackman, and we saw that velocity upheld in-game during the fall tournament circuit. Hicks’ low-80s slider is a swing-and-miss weapon with late movement, and the two pitches are a strong foundation. This past summer Hicks paced all freshman arms with 95 strikeouts (24th among all pitchers) in 65.1 innings pitched. The 95 strikeouts from a freshman pitcher was the most since Blaine Harpenau’s 101 total in the 2017-2018 season. Overall, Hicks made 11 starts for the Eagles and went 6-2 with a 1.39 ERA and a .177 batting average allowed. Big things are ahead for this young arm. More on Brady ⤵️

Brett Wichrowski Brett Wichrowski Acquired: 2023 13th round selection Measurables: 6’2”, 177 lbs, 21 years old Cliff Notes: The Brewers picked the Junior out of Bryant who had steadily improved over his NCAA career last year. By his junior campaign, Wichrowski posted a 4.50 ERA and 64 Ks/25 BBs in 50 innings pitched. He also has steadily added velocity in his offseasons (with Baseball Performance Center), which he showed off in the Spring Breakout series sitting 99 mph. In the Spring Breakout game he went 2 IP with zero earned & one strikeout plus in his outing in Big League Camp he went one scoreless, facing three batters with a K. His mix appears to have a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball with secondary offerings of a cutter, slider, and change-up. All look relatively effective playing off his fastballs, with the cutter jumping out of his hand and slider/change-up being effective enough off of his velocity. With his experience in NCAA baseball, the New England Collegiate Baseball League and the Cape Cod League, I would not be surprised if the Brewers start him in at least A ball. Wichrowski played three seasons at Bryant where he progressed as one would expect. His sophomore campaign was across 38 innings where he posted a 5.21 ERA, 37 Ks, and a high 30 BBs. His Junior season he demonstrated serious improvements, giving up less earned runs on average as well as upping his K rate while decreasing his BB rate. He rode that good season into being a Brewers Draft Pick. I look forward to seeing how the Brewers deploy the righty in the minors. As mentioned above, in the Spring Breakout game he was topping out at 99 mph. He uses that speed when throwing both of his fastballs, while his cutter is about 10 mph slower and effectively horizontally cuts due to his excellent extension. His slider is another nice option for glove-side movement, while he continues to work on his change up. His college walk rates/WHIP are something that are of concern, but more time in the Brewers organization should help him control his offerings better. His multiple plus offerings give Wichrowski a great chance to be an MLB contributor as long as he can improve control (which he showed in his Spring Breakout & Spring Training outings) He is definitely a guy to keep an eye on in 2024 and I could see him gaining transaction on some prospect lists. Congrats to Ryan Ward for having his contract selected and being placed on the Dodgers' 40 Man Roster. Wardo was awarded as the Most Valuable Player in the PCL this past season after hitting .290, with an OPS of .937. He posted a WRC+ of 132, and his 36 home runs led ALL of the Minor Leagues During this season he also became the ALL-TIME home runs leader (90) and RBIs (318) in the history of the Bricktown Ballpark Era for OKC baseball. On a personal note, I've been going to AAA OKC games since 1975. That dates back to All-Sports stadium, and 6 different affiliation changes, 5 of which have been in my lifetime, and that I remember VERY well. So, to see this with my own eyes was truly historical on a personal level for me as well. #89ERS And, to have it happen in the first year of the new branding was a real "page turner" of OKC baseball, so that's SUPER cool too. Ward also drove in 122 runs, which is the most of ANY player in the PCL since 2010, and racked up the most total bases (315) of any player in the PCL since 2001. Ward also set single-season records for the Bricktown era in hits (164), runs (113), and RBIs (122). As per his defense... His outfield play has gotten better and better as each year has passed, and, while his bat will likely always be the"show stealer", he is a good athlete and has become a very solid outfielder. He can also play 1st base, and dabbled in a touch of 2nd base while at Bryant Baseball Speaking of Bryant, he's the only Bulldog ever to hit over .400 for a single season, and he struck out just 1 time his senior Season at Millbury, so the "hit tool" is NOT a new thing for him. As an aside, he graduated with fewer than 100 kids in his High School, and he is not shy to show pride in his "small town" work ethic. With all the home runs over the fence, his highlight of last year was an at-bat where he kept the ball IN the park. Wardo knocked an INSIDE-the-park WALKOFF home run back at the beginning of May. Congrats, Wardo, I could type ALL DAY about this dude, but that will do it for NOW. #dodgers

Full Breakdown on this: "Key Cycle 1162-2" -Tech Stream data gathered from KRs Lexus shows a triggering event where the Lexus travels in reverse 62 Ft at 24.2 MPH. They claim this triggering event is when KR hits JOK. -Using tech stream data, along with data from the Lexus black box, Aperture (crash reconstruction experts) wrote a report. In the report they claim that based on information from the Lexus black box (the time Karen started her ignition) that the triggering event 1162-2 happened from 12:31:38-12:31:43. -This means that Aperture believes Karen Read struck JOK with her SUV sometime between 12:31:38-12:31:43. -On April 28th, Ian Whiffin testified for the CW. During his testimony he stated that JOKs phone data shows that from 12:31:56-12:32:16, JOK was interacting with his phone. He states that after 12:32:16, there is no more interactions between JOK & the phone. -When you compare the two reports, you see that 13 seconds AFTER Aperture claims JOK was struck (12:31:43), Whiffin claims JOK began interacting with his phone (12:31:56). -The medical examiner testified today that the blow to the back of JOKs head would have left him incapacitated. This means it would be IMPOSSIBLE for JOK to have been on his phone at 12:31:56 (Whiffin's report), based on the time of collision (12:31:43) from the crash reconstruction report (Aperture) -To remedy this massive problem for CW, Aperture decided to amend their report, in the middle of the trial. (May 8th) -They claim that the "clocks on JOKs iPhone and the Lexus are off" They state that JOKs iPhone "runs late" -AMAZINGLY, to remedy the issue between Whiffins testimony and their report, they decided "based on fixing the clock differences" that the NEW time that triggering event happened (the collision) was at 12:32:16. -THE EXACT TIME Whiffin stated JOKs iPhone stops recording apple health data and the last time the phone is interacted with. That is complete bullshit. -In the first trial, the time of collision based on THE EXACT SAME DATA, was said to be 12:45. Shockingly, after learning that Karen Read connected to JOKs wifi at 12:36 AM during the trial, the CW changed their time of the collision yet again, that time to 12:30. -Alessi already cross examined Ian Whiffin about this exact issue with the conflicting times between his report and Apertures. during this trial. On no planet should Bev allow this report to be amended and testified to. This is the bed they made and they have to lay in it. If she allows a change, the defense should immediately move for a mistrial. -When you're trying to make up a story, this is what happens. You make it up as you go and are constantly chasing your tail. This is corruption playing out for the world to see.

1B Tanner Thach (UNCW Baseball) is another college bat to keep close tabs on this season. Thach was drafted by the Giants in the 18th round of the 2022 draft but decided to honor his commitment to the Seahawks. Thach made a significant impact in his first year on campus and posted a .290/.356/.544 slash line with 11 2B, 15 HR—a UNCW single-season freshman record—and 68 RBIs. He outdid himself in 2024 and hit .324/.406/.700 with 11 2B, a UNCW single-season record 27 HR and 75 RBIs in 61 games. Thach’s production didn’t end there, though, as he was named a Cape League all-star, hitting .275/.367/.493 with 6 doubles, 8 HR and 25 RBIs. Thach has a strong, physical build at 6’4” and 220-lbs. He has a crouched stance in the box with an open front side and a medium-high handset. It’s a bit of a noisy load in which he drops and drifts his hands, but Thach does possess plenty of bat speed. He has a steep, uphill swing path, and it’s a violent operation that is geared towards getting the ball up in the air and doing damage. However, it can get long at times. Thach’s carrying tool is undoubtedly his immense power. He has established a now-lengthy track record of power production with both metal and wood, and he has zero issue tapping into it on a game-to-game basis. Thach has home run power to all fields, though his highest quality of contact comes to the pull side. He gets the ball up in the air on a consistent basis, and when he catches the baseball on the sweet spot, it flies. Thach posted maximum exit velocities during the spring and summer of 113.5 mph and 103.1 mph, respectively. At the start of the summer, he would sometimes unnecessarily sell out to get to his power which caused him to top-spin line drives to the pull side, but as the season progressed he was able to break that habit. Thach has plus in-game power to all fields. The biggest key going forward for Thach is for him to continue to make enough contact to get to his power on a regular basis. His bat-to-ball skills are fringy, though he did post a 90% in-zone contact rate against all fastballs. Like a lot of hitters, the root of Thach’s contact struggles are secondary offerings. He’ll have difficulty at times picking up spin out of the hand which leads to both miss and chase. Thach will also tend to whiff and chase against heaters that are either elevated or on the outer-half of the plate. However, he does handle velocity well and last season he hit .533/.588/1.033 against all fastballs 92+. While Thach feasts on righthanded pitching, he hit just .246/.321/.551 last season against lefties. Thach’s power is tremendous, but he’ll need to add a coat or two of polish to his hit-ability as he transitions into professional baseball. First base isn’t the flashiest defensive profile, but Thach moves well around the bag and is a strong athlete at the position. He’s not afraid to range into the four-hole and he is a reassuring anchor on the right side of the infield. Thach has an advanced baseball sense, a trait that shines on a game-to-game basis. While he won’t pitch professionally, expect Thach to log some innings this spring for UNCW. His fastball tops out in the low 90s and flashes some hop in the top of the zone, but he’ll also mix in a mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup. The cherry on top with Thach is his makeup, both on and off the field. It’s impossible to stick a grade on it because it’s a 90 on the 20-80 scale. Would have him as a 2nd-early 3rd round type this July. (🎥: UNCW Baseball, Cotuit Kettleers)

THIS WEEKEND'S STORM FEATURES MANY TWISTS AND TURNS.. MY 1ST CALL SNOWFALL MAP... I feel strongly enough to put out a first look at the weekend storm (Saturday afternoon - Sunday morning) as the models have essentially held on to a consistent trend in the vort max and low development going into Saturday afternoon. Two area's that remain a stronger confidence level for me is the area in pink where the mode of precip is pure snow and gray area where mixing will be a big factor during the middle of the event. When you run the overall precip numbers and thermals you arrive in this ball park (outlined below) The twists and turns come into play once we see the vort max rotate north and the interaction between the energy and coastal low by Saturday night. This is why you see such a massive range (6-16") in the pink area as this could either go into a more moderate snow event working off 10:1-11:1 ratios and ending quickly OR we see a slower process with more moisture working northbound. The area in white should see at least 4" with a 6" maximum. I don't see this area going much higher given all that is on the table and how climatology goes. That said, this is also an area I could easily extend into #Baltimore and #DC faster than #Philadelphia and #NYC given wind vectors and cold air advancement. A personal aside, as a TV meteorologist and private sector forecaster I don't like to over-promise and under deliver. That costs $$ and bothers people. That being said, I will not dilute a forecast to hedge it as playing conservative holds more danger to public perception. So understanding my position should hopefully squash any bias you may feel I have :) Here's my initial feeling as we stand here at 6pm on 1/2/24 for a forecast for the weekend! MORE LATER..

My son and I went to the gym late last night to work out some stuff after 3 HS games worth of not hitting the way that he wanted. The session had both a data component and a feel / cue component. As a 17 year old who now has high 60's / low to mid 70's bat speed he has struggled in the last week - specifically against low velocity pitching - to let the ball travel deep enough to get good flush contact. Point being that we had a specific thing to work on. So on the technology side we're using Blast to bat speed, attack angle and VBA, and we're using HitTrax to monitor contact depth in addition to the outcome stuff - exit velocity, launch angle, distance and direction. We also were using two different pitching machines - one offset to the left side, the other offset to the right side. In terms of cues what we ended up with was: - As deep as possible while still being on time - High pitch posture, flat bat path and adjust off if needed But along the way we tried all sorts of stuff - everything from trying to hit a ball to the hot dog cart in oppo foul territory off the left hand off-set machine to trying to find middle of the field ball flight from the right hand offset machine to just going pure let it eat anywhere ball flight off of either machine to score a runner on 2B. In my mind, the best instruction environment for hitting is just a conversation that revolves around: - What were we trying to do vs what did we actually do - What signal can we get about why we did what we did - What adjustments do we need to make to bring our results closer to the intended outcome on the next swing But if the instructor and the player don't even speak the same language...man that conversation is going to be pretty limited in its effectiveness. Because he's 17 we're now able to have these kinds of conversations - with all of these various layers. But the critically important part of the whole thing is that this is an actual two way conversation. Meaning that he's telling me how he feels, we're looking at the data to correlate the feeling to the outcome, we decide on how or if we need to adjust intention for the next swing and we just wash, rinse and repeat that same cycle over and over and over. I wouldn't - and I didn't - coach him this way when he was 12. We used the same tech stack, but the data we paid attention to was a lot more limited. Because that was the level of depth he was able to have a productive conversation about at that time. I'm also exceptionally fortunate that at 17 years old he's still playing and I still get to have these conversations with him.

RHP Matt Scott (Stanford Baseball) is one of the premier college arms in this year's Draft. After a solid Freshman season that was split between the bullpen and the rotation, Scott this year anchored the Stanford rotation and collected a career-high 103 strikeouts against 36 walks across 80 innings. Earned a Team USA invite for the second straight summer. Scott has an XL, workhorse frame at 6-foot-7 and 247-pounds with plenty of strength and physicality throughout. Quiet, "checkpoint-like" delivery. Small side step towards 1B side, gathers himself and breaks into the rest of his operation. Attacks from a high-three quarter slot. Low effort, does a nice job of staying connected and in-sync for someone of his stature. FB sits in the 93-96 range, but will routinely touch 97/98. Tons of carry through the zone, averaged 22.5" of IVB last year. At its best when located in the top-1/2 of the zone, which is also where it generates most of its whiffs. Just needs to stay out of the middle. Threw it 62% of the time and generated a pretty impressive miss rate of 26%, though I think it can become even more effective if he's able to hone in on his command of it. 55 pitch right now, eventual 60 if some of the low hanging fruit is cleaned up. Supplements his FB with a mid-to-upper-80s gyro SL. I actually think Scott's feel for the SL is on par, if not better, than his feel for the heater. Effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. True, hard gyro look against LHH. Will flash more two-plane tilt against RHH with some sharpness to it. Another 55 pitch that last year had a 40% miss rate. Scott needs to up the usage on his split-change. Threw it just 6% of the time last year and I think it's his best secondary pitch. Legit weapon against LHH. Averaged nearly 12 MPH off his FB and he does an excellent job of killing spin on it; averaged 866 RPMs last season. Essentially falls off a table as it approaches the plate. Serious tumbling life with a bit of arm side fade. 48% miss across a limited sample in '24, I'd give it a 60. Command and control are both average, if not a tick above. Little-to-no reliever risk. Really like the body and stuff. Projects to be one of the first few college arms off the board this July and is a potential first-rounder.

From sitting 80 T83 with a torn UCL to 87-90 and pain-free in 1.5 years, a coach's post from @jjasonfosterr🔥 I started working with Max Moore in the summer of ‘22. At the time, he was a HS senior topping out at 83 with consistent elbow issues. In May of his junior year, he partially tore his UCL and was told by doctors it would heal with rest. After going through a shutdown and rehab phase on his own, we were able to run it up to 86 his senior year, although the elbow was a constant issue. He went back to a different doctor, found out his UCL was still torn, and decided to get full TJ in March of ‘23. During the rehab process, Max made significant progress both physically and mentally. His body weight went from 170 to 190 with the following increases in the weight room: DB Bench 5RM: 60 —> 85 Deadlift 1RM: 295 —> 375 DB Row 8RM: 65 —> 100 Max also went through months of what I like to call “the velo yips,” something plenty of guys coming off injury experience. It didn’t matter if his prescribed throwing intensity was 50% or 100%, it all looked like 50%. It felt like max effort to him but there was clearly a mental block there. Why does this happen? Plenty of reasons - internal pressure, trauma associated with the pain/injury, thousands of social media experts pushing their agendas all day, watching YouTube videos all hours of the night trying to figure out “what’s wrong with me,” but that’s a post for another day. After countless conversations with Max and experimentation within his throwing schedule, we finally decided it was time to get back to playing baseball. Stop worrying about hitting certain metrics in the weight room, stop worrying about rehabbing a healthy arm, and stop trying to “figure out” a made-up problem (yips aren’t real 🤷‍♂️). Go pitch and we’ll see what happens. Max proceeded to hit 89 multiple times in his first outing back, followed by multiple 90s the week after. The best part is seeing how his teammates reacted, knowing how tough this dude is and how much he’s had to push through to get to this point. Foot on the gas, only up from here 🚀 -Jason
