These are beautiful Mangroves of Punnakayal in Thoothukudi District. Under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission the Thoothukudi Forest Division has taken up focused mangrove conservation works in the Punnakayal coastal belt covering 83.76 hectares including 14.50 hectares of new plantations and 69.26 hectares of restoration strengthening coastal resilience and improving long-term ecosystem stability through these bioshields. Chennai you are looking at the newly planted fabulous mangrove green belt in the heart of the city at Adyar ! As part of our passionate Mangrove Mission drive, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department has planted 5,000 mangrove saplings across 5 hectares, adding a shining green jewel to city's biodiversity heritage. At the Adyar Estuary near Broken Bridge, the Chennai Forest Division has created a fishbone with three main canals and 62 distribution canals across the Battle of Adyar Island. To protect these from grazing 582 metres of fish nets and even used sarees have been fixed as barriers. This initiative will contribute to shielding Chennai’s coast from cyclones and sea-level rise. Kudos to Chennai DFO and his dedicated team #TNMangroveMission #TNForest #Mangroves #Climateaction

Here is some fabulous news from Tamil Nadu. A new beautiful Mangrove forest is coming up in 25 hectares at Kudikadu village in Cuddalore District. In one of it's kind initiative we have planted 37,500 propagules of Rhizophora & Avicenia species under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission last year. This would help to conserve marine biodiversity and enhance livelihood opportunities for the local community. Green TN Mission is breaking new grounds with fresh plantation of 5 lakh Mangrove propagules in the state. Daybreak over the Muthupet mangroves, where sky meets a living forest of Mangroves. We are truly on a Mangrove Mission, creating and conserving them for generations. Government of Tamil Nadu is reviving these coastal guardians through mass plantation, invasive species removal & community stewardship. During my visit to Muthupet in Thiruvarur, I could see a quiet mangrove revolution, 1,350 hectares of new plantations and 707 hectares of restoration under the Green TN Mission under various schemes. Using innovative techniques like the Fishbone design, the TN Forest Department, with strong local community participation, has planted over 16 lakh saplings, generating 86,597 days of livelihood. Six Village Mangrove Councils are now actively safeguarding and nurturing this ecosystem. Kudos to DFO Thiru Srikanth and his entire team of Forest Rangers, Guards and watchers for this incredible work. #Mangroves #TNForest #TNMangroves #MangroveMission

The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Our Elephants are checking out the Mobile Wildlife Forensic cum Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at a Tamil Nadu Forest Department elephant camp. An initiative of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this first-of-its-kind facility is providing advanced veterinary care directly into the field. Equipped with a haematology analyser, serum biochemistry analyser, microscope, centrifuge, refrigerators and a -20°C deep freezer, it enables rapid on-site diagnosis, disease surveillance, forensic investigations and instant diagnostic reports. By bringing sophisticated diagnostics to the doorstep of elephants and other wildlife, it enables faster treatment, reduces the stress of transportation and improves the chances of survival. Our hearts are melting with joy to see the Elephant mother raising her trunk to thank our foresters after they rescued and united a very young baby elephant with the mother. The baby had slipped and fallen into a canal in Pollachi in Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu. The Mother tried hard to rescue the baby but the young one was unable to come out due to strong water flow. Kudos to the team for their exceptional efforts which led to the successful reunion even though the operation was fraught with risks.Fabulous work by FD Ramasubraniam, DD B.Teja, Pugalenthi FRO, Thilakar Forester, Saravanan Forest guard,Vellingiri Forest guard, Murali Forest watcher, Rasu Forest watcher, Balu APW, Nagaraj APW, Mahesh APW, & Chinnathan forest guard. #TNForest Tamil Nadu Forest Department #Elephantrescue TN DIPR

The area you see in the video was covered with a toxic invasive weed about a year ago. It now has lush green grass providing food to Gaurs, elephants, deer and other animals. One of the biggest threats to forests and wildlife around the world is from toxic invasives which are taking over our forests like wildfire. Urgent action is needed to remove these to safeguard forest biodiversity. In Tamil Nadu we have successfully reclaimed 493 Hectares of pristine forest land from Senna spectabilis a toxic invasive weed which kills native vegetation. In a collaborative effort the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper Ltd ( TN Govt PSU) has taken out around 21,178 tonnes of the weed from Forest areas of Mudhumalai Tiger Reserve and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and converted as 6000 MT of printing and writing paper ! Nearly 15 species of grass & 5 species of legumes have been found coming up from the area where Senna has been cleared now. A wild rice variety that was not reported from Mudumalai has also been found. We are absolutely delighted to see our forests coming alive #TNForest Tamil Nadu Forest Department TN DIPR MoEF&CC #rewild

Today, Oloolus residents together with the Community Forests Association have occupied the forest and chased away the loggers like burukenge. Restoring degraded forests is one of the most powerful actions to protect biodiversity and combat climate change.
