40 years ago today, Ace of Aces was released. It's probably a bit too old for some of the people who follow my account but it was certainly way ahead of its time back in 1986. Superb graphics, excellent sound effects and a story/gameplay that felt highly immersive - those are the things that I remember when first playing this as a kid. Not an easy game by any means but it got you hooked fast. I am not enough of a history buff to know whether the missions were somewhat realistic but I would like to believe so. The mission briefings and the "interactive" map during the game added to that feeling of authenticity. We used to turn up the volume for this one, especially for the intro and cutscene when the mission starts and the black and white picture slide show started, with the overlapping sound effects at the 0:30 mark - it still fascinates me to this day. That cutscene uses a total of six colours and it still looks absolutely incredible.

I used to play Street Fighter II all the time, but the first time I saw Art of Fighting, the visual impact was unbelievable. The characters filled the entire screen, fighting with overwhelming intensity. And when the distance between them increased, the screen would dynamically zoom out — that effect felt absolutely revolutionary at the time. It was stunning. On top of that, the facial damage system was incredibly realistic. The more you got hit, the more your character’s face would swell and bruise. It added a level of immersion that I had never experienced before. And did you know? The concept of the “super move” was first introduced in Art of Fighting. That was the legendary Ryuko Ranbu. When your life gauge was almost empty, you could unleash it and turn the tide of battle in a single moment. That comeback mechanic felt amazing. Oh, and if I remember correctly, this was also the very first “100 Mega Shock” game. The game was later ported to the SNES, Sega Genesis, and PC Engine CD. Among them, the PC Engine version was surprisingly faithful to the arcade original.

ollie was asked who of the veterans on the grid would be a good mentor to rookies and the host suggested carlos ollie: “i rate him very, very highly. i mean, when i was a reserve driver with ferrari and i was listening in on all the debriefs and the detail and the way he's able to describe what he feels in the car is incredible. because it's one thing feeling it and often i was finding, okay, i'm feeling the same thing as this guy or esteban, for example, but carlos was able to describe it to the engineers in a way that they could improve the car. i think that's such an important quality to have.”

Midwinter (1989) by Mike Singleton is a massive game in every sense of the word. For its time, it was incredibly ambitious, blending first-person action, strategy, and RPG elements into a pretty unique package. It was definitely not a "load up and play" game - the learning curve was extremely steep (it took me ages to figure it out). In the story, a meteorite impact has triggered a new ice age, leaving a vast 160,000-square-mile frozen island. You begin as Captain John Stark, a police officer tasked with building a guerrilla resistance against the invading forces of General Masters. You can recruit up to 32 unique characters, each with their own personality, skills (such as marksmanship or mechanics), backstories, and relationships. The game also features a detailed body-part injury system, along with hunger and exhaustion mechanics… and remember, if you think that's sounds a bit "meh, so?", this was released in 1989! It was widely praised at the time for its enormous open world, vector-based 3D graphics, and mix of genres. Many consider it one of the first true open-world games, and being quite ahead of its time.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

The Sycamore Gap Tree in the Uk was illegally cut down in 2023 by two men in an act of vandalism. The tree was estimated to be 120-150 years old and had become an iconic spot to visit. Most people referred to it as the Robin Hood tree as it was in the movie that Kevin Costner was in. The tree was also in Bryan Adams music video "Everything I do, I do it for you," and a few other shows. It was one of the country's most photographed trees and an emblem for the North East of England. The two men, Daniel Graham and Adam Carrutherswere sentenced to 4 years and 3 months in July 2025. Luckily the stump has thrown up basal shoots and cuttings have been gathered from the tree but it's estimated it will be 150 years from now before it becomes what it once was.

There’s a new claim that “essentially, all that happened was Trump got tired, took control and forced it on Netanyahu, and this is basically the same deal that could have been reached a year earlier,” with the disturbing implication, that’s horrible to say, that IDF soldiers died in vain for a cause that had already been achieved. So, let’s revisit the plans that were laid out by both the current and former American administrations to see if they match up. For example, the Biden plan from June 1, 2024, which was met with considerable enthusiasm, and was even later acknowledged as Netanyahu’s plan. I want to highlight the difference. In the first phase, the IDF should have already pulled back to roughly its current position, and then it was just about releasing humanitarian hostages. As if not all of them are “humanitarian.” Then it transitioned to discussing the release of living hostages. In this phase, the IDF would withdraw from all of Gaza, until the last centimetre, while all the dead hostages remain in Gaza. It’s as different as day and night. Here, everyone is returning, including the dead, and the IDF is still in half of Gaza. This isn’t just about some desire to maintain an occupation or garrison force, but rather to ensure that Hamas disarms — something that didn’t happen in the Biden proposal. So now let’s move on to the Witkoff plan, much closer to us, much better for Israel, but still different. There was talk of releasing half of the dead hostages, but then a temporary ceasefire for two months of negotiations to end the war, and then the IDF would withdraw from more places than it is now, and there would be a guarantee that the war would not be renewed. Once again, we see that there was no connection between the IDF remaining on the ground and the promise that Hamas would disarm, especially while some of the hostages are still there. The greatness of this outline is this issue. I also want to say something general about the matter of responsibility. As ridiculous as it was on October 7 and afterwards to hear from Netanyahu’s supporters that the one who is to blame is the IDF chief of staff, the Shin Bet chief, the attorney general and the Military Advocate General, and that Netanyahu has no part in it — it’s as ridiculous as it is that now they’re saying, “Thank you Trump and thank you Nitzan Alon, and thank you to all of them and to the Qatari prime minister, and Netanyahu and Ron Dermer have nothing to do with it at all.” Indeed, Netanyahu had a very large part in the failure of October 7, and he also has a very large part together with Dermer in this deal. By the way, how does that connect to what Kushner said tonight in Egypt? He said that both the prime minister and Dermer made very big compromises and took risks to see the end of the war. I would like to make a suggestion. Once upon a time, when there was only one channel and people didn’t like the commentators, they said, “Watch the game without the commentary.” I say, let’s watch Trump and Netanyahu’s move without the commentary, because there are a lot of conversations, and this and that, and slander, and sometimes even quotes, but in practice there has never been a president and a prime minister who acted like this, and the results are evident from Iran, through the Golan Heights, through the embassy and now Gaza.

"A new species of creature has entered your dungeon..." Bullfrog made some of the most unique and best games ever in the 90s. They always pushed the limits and were willing to try new concepts: Populous, Syndicate, Magic Carpet and – of course – Dungeon Keeper 2. This one was released in 1999, not long before EA shut the studio down. You command imps to excavate dungeons, mine gold, and construct rooms like lairs, hatcheries, and torture chambers to attract and train minions such as goblins, trolls, demons and more to defend against invading heroes, while trying to seize portal gems to breach the surface world. And that voice-over was simply perfect! It was so good to be evil :) One of the many reasons Bullfrog is still missed and remembered as one of the most iconic studios ever is their unmatched skill at always coming up with something new. I can’t think of another game studio that perfected that skill to Bullfrog’s degree.

"It was after the filming that we started, you know, chatting in a group chat and stuff like that, and individually over the summer. I think the three of us were in a really unique position compared to everybody else because it was like, definitely our lives were problably about to change the most. A least that's how it felt at the time, especially as we got closer and closer to the show and more and more excitement was building. The three of us were about to level up in a big way, and we kind of felt it. I don't think any of us thought it was going to level up the way it did. But yeah, it was fun. [...] We've all been very busy right now. But I think it's still nice to check in with them and just remember that in the middle of all of this, we're the same three people." 🔗

Does anyone know this game? I never played it in the arcade, but I had a lot of fun playing it on a PC DOS computer. All you had to do was beat your rival, but they would chase you so closely that the tension was incredible. When you win a race, you can use the prize money to upgrade your car, and with the variety of tracks, it never gets boring. I also have great memories of sitting with my friends, three of us sharing one keyboard and playing together. 😆
