Starcraft (Blizzard, 1998) is probably the best example of a game that didn't just stand the test of time, it defeated it. To this day, it is still played on a high (competitive) level, has reached ultimate cult status, and is a legend among the greatest games ever made. Blizzard was such an incredible powerhouse in the 90s up until the mid to late 2000s. I played Starcraft for many years and was never very good at it, but I loved it nonetheless. It has such a high skill ceiling that you always feel you can do and get better. And what some of the best pros in esports show is reaching God-like skill level, truly remarkable. Just let this sink in for a second: The game is 27 (!) years old, and is still played on the highest level. If you can name a game that challenges Starcraft in that context, please, I am all ears. The series sold over 17 million copies of games and expansions by the end of 2015, making it the best selling PC strategy game of all time. By the end of 2017, the franchise had grossed over $1 billion in total revenue. Those of you who played it, probably all know Artosis and Tasteless, who made Starcraft a household name in the English speaking markets through their live commenting of tournaments around the world. Instead of a classic inventory or command prompts, it was controlled entirely through musical notes (spells). By combining new sequences of notes, you could cast spells to interact with the environment - like opening a door or sharpening a blade. These spells were learned by observing the world around you. You could also play some notes backwards to reverse their effect (for example, open/close a door). The game was successful and attracted a much larger portion of female gamers than traditional adventures had before. It was also more appealing to beginners due to its gentler and more accessible nature (more experienced gamers found it generally a bit too easy and short). I always wondered why such a successful and brilliant game never got a sequel. Originally, two more sequels were planned, but Lucasfilm buried the idea. No clue why.

Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Powermonger... but most importantly Syndicate (1993) left a huge mark in the 90s as an isometric real-time tactical and strategic game. It is set in a dystopian future in which corporations have replaced governments and puts the player in control of a corporation fighting for global dominance. You go on countless missions all over the world, eliminate targets, blow up stuff, research weapons and equipment, and upgrade your team of cybernetically modified agents attempting to take control of a particular country. The graphics blew me away at the time, the music and sound effects were spot on, the vibe was very dark/dystopian, and it felt like a very fresh new concept when it was published. I don't think anyone who played games in the 90s would not know Syndicate.

Westwood was such an amazing game studio. One of their timeless classics is Eye of the Beholder 2, which was released in 1991. The intro alone gave me nerd chills - anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons would remember Khelben Blackstaff, and if he considers you his friend, what an honour! The game itself is your typical dungeon crawler. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way but appreciating it for what it was and is, a great game of its genre. Excellent graphics (I am such a sucker for that 90s pixel style), good sound effects and music, and an easy to use interface, making the real-time fights fast paced but manageable. Among the greats of Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry, the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore were probably a tier below, but I always loved coming back to them. To me, this game is emblematic of the early 90s, and for that I love it.

Do you remember the very first game you played via LAN? Not an internet multiplayer game, but the old school way of setting up a local network with friends. Duke Nukem 3D was the first game I ever played in a LAN setting. Those game sessions were absolutely legendary. And they required quite some preparation and effort! Dragging an 17" monitor, heavy-ass tower, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and cables was quite a sight - especially on public transport. I got some of the weirdest looks back then. The stares from the older generation were priceless, they probably thought "teenagers today are strange". Duke Nukem 3D had excellent graphics (for its time), epic sound effects, legendary weapons, and a total badass vibe which made it truly emblematic of 90s gaming. Feels like a different lifetime to be honest. I know people will argue today's tech and games are better, faster, and smoother but early LAN sessions can't be topped by better tech. It was a wonderful experience and I am glad for the memories - even they include us having to fiddle around with settings and cables for hours before we even fired the first shot.

When I play turn based games like Persona I feel like it’s very “stop and go” but in FF7 I feel like the game is very snappy and fast paced? The enemy always has a chance to attack you while you’re choosing what to do and I really enjoy the fact that the game is aggressive🙂‍↕️

#5 You can't steal any cars and you can only enter from the left side of the car There's only one animation to enter the car and that's from the left side, during some in-game missions you aren't even allowed to get out of the car and explore the open world like this one here, I tried getting out of the car to walk on foot but the game didn't allow me to. This is because the Open World of MindsEye is extremely restricted, the Game doesn't want you do explore so it either forces you to move from point A to point B with a timer and most of the times it asks you to enter a car and you can't get out of it once you're inside the vehicle.

Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Origin Systems, 1992) was one of the most complex yet fun roleplaying games I ever played. Its world is huge and only if you love reading a lot dialogue and being a rather patient player, Ultima VII is for you. I often wonder how terrible such a game would do today, with players' attention spans maxing out after a few minutes at best. The Black Gate was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, being widely regarded as a high point in the series. In an interview, Richard Garriott stated that Ultima VII was "the most masterfully executed of the Ultima series". He has also stated that the game was, along with Ultima IV, his own favorite installment overall. Ultima VII is also the first game in the series that runs entirely in real-time, and only pauses when the inventory, the menu, or a dialogue is open, significantly affecting combat. This was one of the bigger changes from the predecessors and something that a turn based RPG fan had to get used to. It certainly took me some time.

When Anno 1602 was published in 1998, I bet nobody outside the German-speaking market had ever heard of Max Design. They had some minor titles before, such as 1869, Burntime or Der Clou - but again, most likely unknown to any non-German player. All that changed with the release of Anno 1602, which was a complete surprise blockbuster, both commercially and critically acclaimed. It eventually turned into a franchise that is still alive today with its most recent release, Anno 117, last year. So, what makes Anno so great? For its time it showed incredible attention to detail: excellent graphics (for a business/management/strategy sim), the genre-typical and wonderful music, and above all a highly addictive “just one more minute” gameplay - seeing your empire grow through colonization and trade. While a military aspect exists in Anno, it is secondary at best. The game had what we call “Wuselfaktor” in German. Loosely translated, I would describe it as the joy of managing the small things, being happy about tiny improvements, and seeing growth and progress. Other games such as Sim City The Settlers had that Wuselfaktor too. One of the best games ever - one that just felt full of love for the small things and full of soul.

If you had a Nintendo 64, you played this epic classic. Super Mario 64 turns 30 this year. It was the first Mario game in a 3D world, and remains the most successful game ever for the Nintendo 64 with over 11 million (!) copies sold. Being a huge Super Mario fan from the NES era, seeing Mario come to live in a 3D world was incredible. Once again, the goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, a battle for the ages. To this day, it's my favorite Mario game. Did you play (and finish) it back then?

It felt like the floodgates opened after it paved the way for an entire genre. Yes, there were others before it, but in terms of depth, playability, graphics, cutscenes, three different (and playable) factions, and digitized speech, it was unbelievably awesome. I can only name a handful of games that captured me the way Dune II did - it was a rare gem. Controlling units individually feels tedious from today’s perspective, but it never bothered me back then. I guess you can’t miss what you don’t expect. Instead, I was totally hooked - not just on the game's concept, but also on how it was presented. For 1992, the graphics (for a strategy game) were impressive, the cutscenes had that Cinemaware quality, and the music and digitized speech added to the "I am right in the middle of this" vibe. Of course, I started with Atreides, but over time I - and probably you too - switched to the "dark side" and played Harkonnen and Ordos. The Harkonnen Devastator (epic name) was so badass. I know that Dune 2000 was released years later but I never felt it was a worthy sequel. A real Dune III would be a dream come true...

One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

✨ A lot of progress on my drone sim today which has now evolved to a kind of soldier + drone sim (my entry to the #vibejam even though I can't win of course) Today I changed the sounds from synth to real sounds, I edited a lot in Audacity to make these shooting loops and now it sounds much more real Also added ambient background sounds like nature birds but also general like distant war sounds And of course you hear the drone sound we had before The new game mode I'll show soon is you start as a soldier and you have like 3 drones in your backpack you can use, you press F and then you launch a drone from your point and attack, then if you exit that or it crashes you're back to being a soldier, very fun With the sounds it feels much more real and scary! I keep saying but then next is multiplayer...cause I want to see you all walk and fly around in my game 😊😊😊

Did you play this one back in the day? I was never that good at FPS games, but there were so many great ones to choose from in the 90s, that they often ended up in our LAN weekend sessions. One of those was Unreal Tournament (Epic Games, 1999). I loved the incredible variety of levels and its designs, which made it stand apart from other shooters of its era. Brilliant graphics, fluid gameplay (even on PCs that weren't high end, like the ones you would need for Quake III Arena for example), kickass sound, and your typical capture the flag or deathmatches. Many magazines gave it "Game of the Year" awards, the metacritic score was 94%, and if you ask any gamer what the best FPS of the 90s were, Unreal is definitely part of that group. I recently played it again and it has hardly aged.
