Why is @DanaBashCNN making assertions about vaccines? In 2022, Pfizer signed a multi-year deal making it CNN's exclusive pharmaceutical advertiser. Large, well-designed trials and major systematic reviews consistently show little to no clinically meaningful benefit on key outcomes such as mortality, hospitalization, mechanical ventilation, time to recovery, or viral clearance.  High-Quality Evidence Against Benefit Major RCTs and reviews include: • ACTIV-6 (US, ~1,600 outpatients): Ivermectin (400 μg/kg for 3 days) did not meaningfully shorten time to sustained recovery versus placebo (median 12 vs. 13 days). Hospitalization/death rates were essentially identical.  • TOGETHER trial (Brazil): Early treatment did not reduce hospitalization or prolonged emergency observation. • I-TECH (Malaysia, high-risk patients): No reduction in progression to severe disease, mechanical ventilation, ICU admission, or mortality.  • Cochrane living reviews: Moderate- to high-certainty evidence that ivermectin has little or no effect on mortality (especially in outpatients), clinical improvement, hospitalization risk, or other key outcomes. Earlier versions noted very low certainty due to small/poor-quality trials; updates with better data strengthened the “no benefit” conclusion.  • Recent meta-analyses (2024–2025) of dozens of RCTs (often >10,000 participants) generally find no significant effect on mortality, mechanical ventilation, PCR conversion, ICU admission, or hospitalization. Occasional signals (e.g., minor symptom duration differences or reduced adverse events in some analyses) are inconsistent, of low certainty, and do not support routine use.  Why Earlier Positive Claims Did Not Hold Up Some smaller RCTs and early meta-analyses (often including lower-quality or non-pre-registered studies) reported large reductions in mortality or other benefits. These frequently suffered from: • Small sample sizes • High risk of bias • Methodological issues (some trials later questioned or retracted) • Heterogeneity in dosing, timing, and populations Larger, rigorously conducted trials have not reproduced those benefits. Ivermectin remains appropriate for its approved antiparasitic indications at proper doses. High or veterinary doses carry risks of toxicity. Claims of strong antiviral effects at standard human doses have not been supported by clinical outcomes data (in vitro activity typically required far higher concentrations). In short, while the topic generated significant debate and some positive signals in lower-quality work, the body of reproducible, high-quality evidence does not support effectiveness for treating COVID-19. Current standard care relies on other therapies (antivirals like nirmatrelvir-ritonavir where indicated, supportive care, vaccination, etc.) Roughly 30-40% of our fellow citizens only get their news from right wing echo chambers. Regardless of what the science demonstrates. That is testimony to how science illiterate we truly are as a nation. We are never going to agree on the causes of autism or why the health outcomes is dismal despite spending so much on healthcare.
