Printing metal made easy! 🖊️ Most metal 3D printing today relies on heat. Lasers or electron beams melt metal powder or wire, fuse it, and let it solidify again. That works, but it’s inefficient: a lot of energy is lost before it ever reaches the material, and even more is wasted as heat dissipates into the surroundings. This work explores a very different idea. Instead of melting metal, it uses high-frequency, low-amplitude mechanical vibrations to temporarily lower a metal’s yield stress and enhance atomic diffusion. Under these conditions, metal can be shaped and joined without full melting. By combining shaping and joining at the same time, the researchers introduce a new additive manufacturing process called Resonance-Assisted Deposition (RAD). Because it avoids melt–solidification, RAD is far more energy-efficient and enables things that are difficult or impossible with conventional methods. Pretty cool method! #UPDATE Sheriff Kevin McMahill, alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Clark County Fire Department, provided a detailed update regarding the complex investigation at a residence on Sugar Springs Drive in northeast Las Vegas near Washington and Hollywood. A little over a week ago, LVMPD received information that laboratory equipment and potentially hazardous materials may have been stored inside the home. As investigators looked deeper, they learned the property owner was connected to a 2023 illegal biological laboratory investigation in Reedley, California. In that California case, investigators reportedly discovered materials possibly associated with infectious diseases including hepatitis, COVID-19, HIV, malaria, and other potentially dangerous pathogens. While it was unknown whether similar materials were present at the Las Vegas residence, the possibility required LVMPD and partner agencies to proceed with extreme caution. Because of those concerns, LVMPD’s Counterterrorism Section and ARMOR Task Force, in partnership with the FBI and regional fire agencies, initiated a joint investigation and extensive operational planning to address the potential risk safely. Early Saturday morning at 5:51 a.m., LVMPD SWAT served the search warrant. Three individuals renting rooms inside the home were safely removed and are not involved in the investigation. Investigators focused on a locked garage believed to contain the materials. To minimize risk, LVMPD deployed drones for aerial awareness and a tactical robot to clear the interior and conduct air sampling before personnel entered. Once safe to proceed, the ARMOR team entered wearing protective equipment. Investigators observed refrigerators, a freezer, laboratory-type equipment, and numerous containers holding unknown liquid substances. Due to the unknown nature of the materials, the operation required multiple controlled entries, strict safety protocols, and extensive decontamination procedures. Evidence collection continued through Sunday and concluded at approximately 6:30 p.m. The materials were transported to a Southern Nevada Health District facility for secure storage and are now being transferred to an FBI laboratory for testing. Remediation of the residence was completed early this morning. Final checks confirmed the location is safe. One suspect connected to the property owner remains in federal custody related to the Reedley investigation. LVMPD also arrested 55-year-old Ori Solomon on a charge of disposing and discharging hazardous waste. This operation involved a coordinated response from numerous local, state, and federal partners. Sheriff McMahill emphasized that modern technology, including drones, robotics, and real-time command monitoring, played a critical role in protecting first responders while allowing the operation to move quickly and safely. We thank the residents of the neighborhood for their patience and cooperation throughout the weekend. Additional confirmed information will be released as it becomes available.

#UPDATE Sheriff Kevin McMahill, alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Clark County Fire Department, provided a detailed update regarding the complex investigation at a residence on Sugar Springs Drive in northeast Las Vegas near Washington and Hollywood. A little over a week ago, LVMPD received information that laboratory equipment and potentially hazardous materials may have been stored inside the home. As investigators looked deeper, they learned the property owner was connected to a 2023 illegal biological laboratory investigation in Reedley, California. In that California case, investigators reportedly discovered materials possibly associated with infectious diseases including hepatitis, COVID-19, HIV, malaria, and other potentially dangerous pathogens. While it was unknown whether similar materials were present at the Las Vegas residence, the possibility required LVMPD and partner agencies to proceed with extreme caution. Because of those concerns, LVMPD’s Counterterrorism Section and ARMOR Task Force, in partnership with the FBI and regional fire agencies, initiated a joint investigation and extensive operational planning to address the potential risk safely. Early Saturday morning at 5:51 a.m., LVMPD SWAT served the search warrant. Three individuals renting rooms inside the home were safely removed and are not involved in the investigation. Investigators focused on a locked garage believed to contain the materials. To minimize risk, LVMPD deployed drones for aerial awareness and a tactical robot to clear the interior and conduct air sampling before personnel entered. Once safe to proceed, the ARMOR team entered wearing protective equipment. Investigators observed refrigerators, a freezer, laboratory-type equipment, and numerous containers holding unknown liquid substances. Due to the unknown nature of the materials, the operation required multiple controlled entries, strict safety protocols, and extensive decontamination procedures. Evidence collection continued through Sunday and concluded at approximately 6:30 p.m. The materials were transported to a Southern Nevada Health District facility for secure storage and are now being transferred to an FBI laboratory for testing. Remediation of the residence was completed early this morning. Final checks confirmed the location is safe. One suspect connected to the property owner remains in federal custody related to the Reedley investigation. LVMPD also arrested 55-year-old Ori Solomon on a charge of disposing and discharging hazardous waste. This operation involved a coordinated response from numerous local, state, and federal partners. Sheriff McMahill emphasized that modern technology, including drones, robotics, and real-time command monitoring, played a critical role in protecting first responders while allowing the operation to move quickly and safely. Dear Hon. @SupaMandiwanzira, Thank you so much for your insightful and PASSIONATE comments on the 30MW Gairezi Hydro Power Project and more importantly, for consistently REPRESENTING the genuine expectations and hopes of the people of Nyanga Constituency. I fully appreciate and SHARE the frustration within the constituency, particularly after the preparatory works that were done and the excitement that was created around EMPLOYMENT prospects which the Project would have created. As Zimbabweans, we all want to see such projects being COMMISSIONED because beyond electricity, they carry real socio-economic benefits for communities. Allow me to clarify and give a brief summary of the pertinent facts ; The tender for the Gairezi 30 MW Hydro Project was not awarded to “CHIVAYO” personally, but to a consortium led by an Indian Multi-billion dollar Government-owned engineering conglomerate BHEL(Bharat Heavy Equipment Limited ), working together with Angelique International Ltd , while Intratrek Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd participated as their local contractor. Like many local contractors across Africa, Intratrek rides on the CREDIBILITY, bankability and TECHNICAL CAPACITY of international OEM partners in order to achieve project delivery. In this case, that international credibility was precisely what made the consortium competitive and to be awarded the tender as the LOWEST compliant bidder to specification. The fundamental issue that prevented implementation was challenges in achieving FINANCIAL CLOSURE. The project cost was USD 113 million for 30MW, which made the business case extremely DIFFICULT to finance when tested against the lenders’ requirements of Return on Investment, yield, asset return, plant load factor, and overall BANKABILITY. In simple terms, it is not enough to have a technically feasible hydro power plant. Financiers must be satisfied that the project has sustainable CASHFLOWS and repayment security. Unfortunately, the FINANCIAL MODEL struggled to meet that threshold. It is also important for both you and the general public to understand how projects like this actually work. Before any DISBURSEMENT is made, there are strict project finance requirements such as Letters of Credit, Advance Payment Guarantees, Performance Guarantees, supplier guarantees, OEM confirmations and technical milestones such as Factory Acceptance Tests and inspections for key equipment. As Contractors, we even incur substantial UPFRONT COSTS during the cumbersome bidding process for international travel to OEMs often in India and elsewhere overseas, before the final tender submission. So if anything, Contractors also get DISAPPOINTED when projects stall, because we invest real money and expert a return out of it. We are always ready to execute because the more we CONSTRUCT and commission projects, the more we EARN through fairly reasonable margins. It is however understandable that in this case, ZESA through Government ultimately prioritised high-yield generation projects such as Hwange Units 7 & 8 which gave a total output of 600MW after project execution and commissioning . In simple terms , suffice it to say this explains why the Gairezi project and others such as Harare and Munyati Repowering Projects were held in abeyance. I therefore respectfully acknowledge your concerns as an Hon. Member, and I look forward to the project being REVISITED by Government and the most ideal funding structure being considered for its development.
