JRA and NAR dirt tracks are basically sand, and as you can see in the video, the sand is washed regularly. Sand is a consumable surface. As it gets used, the grains gradually break down into finer particles and become more clay-like, which can be dangerous. During the washing process, that degraded sand is removed. Quite a bit of debris other than sand also gets mixed into the track over time, so the entire surface needs to be cleaned periodically. The track can be completely different before and after the sand is washed, enough to affect how races tend to play out. Some people even keep track of when the sand was last washed.
