Today is UN Chinese Language Day—a perfect moment to celebrate one of the most influential writing systems in human history. For thousands of years, the cultures of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam were deeply shaped by Chinese civilization. Until the early 20th century, Classical Chinese served as the shared literary and scholarly language across East Asia, much like Latin did in Europe. Chinese characters (汉字 / 漢字) became the common script of the region, later adapted locally as Kanji in Japan, Hanja in Korea, and Chữ Hán in Vietnam. Over time, each country developed its own writing innovations to better express their spoken languages: • Japan created Hiragana (平仮名) and Katakana (片仮名). • Korea invented Hangul (한글). • Vietnam eventually adopted the Latin-based Vietnamese alphabet. Yet the story of Chinese characters themselves is truly fascinating. 🇨🇳 The Legend of Cangjie According to ancient Chinese tradition, the characters were invented by Cangjie (仓颉), a legendary scribe under the Yellow Emperor around the 27th century BCE. While observing the tracks of birds and animals, the patterns of nature, and the constellations in the sky, he created the first symbols—zì (字). Legend says that on the day he succeeded, grains of rice rained from the heavens, and that night ghosts wept—because humanity had just gained the power of written wisdom. UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20, which was chosen as the date "to pay tribute to Cangjie, who is presumed to have invented Chinese characters about 5,000 years ago". Chinese characters are the world’s oldest continuously used writing system and one of the most widely used by number of speakers. In Chinese mainland since the 1950s, the government promoted simplified characters to boost literacy. Meanwhile, traditional characters continue to thrive in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. You’ll still see both versions depending on the context—books, signs, calligraphy, or digital media. 🇯🇵 Japan: Kanji + Kana Chinese writing reached Japan around the 5th century CE. The Japanese adapted the characters as kanji and cleverly developed two new scripts from them: • Hiragana, flowing and cursive, used for grammar and native words. • Katakana, angular and sharp, mainly for foreign loanwords and emphasis. Modern Japanese is an effective mixture: kanji carry the core meaning of words, while hiragana and katakana handle the rest. Japanese students learn 2,136 joyo kanji by the end of high school, with many more used in daily life. 🇰🇷🇰🇵 Korea: From Hanja to Hangul For most of Korean history, Literary Chinese written in Hanja (한자) was the official script—from the Gojoseon era all the way through the Joseon Dynasty. Even after King Sejong the Great created the beautiful Hangul alphabet in 1443, it took centuries for it to fully replace Literary Chinese in official and scholarly writing. Today, Hanja is still essential for reading historical documents, classical literature, and academic texts. Anyone seriously studying Korean history or the humanities needs a solid command of Chinese characters. 🇻🇳 Vietnam: From Chữ Hán to Quốc Ngữ In Vietnam, Chinese characters (Chữ Hán) dominated official and scholarly writing until the early 20th century. Around the 13th century, Vietnamese scholars created Chữ Nôm—a unique system that combined Chinese characters with newly invented ones to write the Vietnamese language. It was especially popular for recording folk poetry and literature. During French colonial rule, the Latin-based Vietnamese alphabet (Quốc Ngữ) gradually took over. Today, Chinese characters and Chữ Nôm are mostly reserved for cultural and ceremonial purposes—like traditional calligraphy, temple inscriptions, and cultural festivals. Yes, Gen Z, we get it—you don’t care about data privacy. But that’s just a tiny part of the story. The real issue here is control. The Chinese Communist Party is using TikTok to build a blueprint of influence over you and our society. They’re not just tracking what you do; they’re deciding what you see, and therefore *how you think*. There is plenty of evidence this is already happening. Now imagine how much more powerful it would be as an information warfare weapon when the proverbial shit hits the fan in a potential conflict over Taiwan. Yeah, the Chinese will take control of all advanced semi-conductor chips in Taiwan (the ones that power your precious smartphone), and then use your addiction to TikTok to convince you it’s all a good idea. TikTok, as an entertainment platform, is an incredible product. It’s fun, it’s creative, and millions of Americans love using it. But we also need to recognize that it’s a Trojan horse. And right now, that horse is carrying Chinese Communist Party influence into our backyard and sending American’s data back to Beijing. That’s the problem we need to solve. The goal here is not about trying to stop American small businesses who use TikTok to promote themselves, the latest dances, or end “brain rot” trends—though maybe fixing that wouldn’t hurt either. It’s about making sure that enjoyment doesn’t come at the cost of our privacy, our freedom, or our national security. There’s a way to fix this. We don’t need to kill TikTok; we need to kick the Chinese Communist Party out of it. Ownership by someone who shares—or at least respects—our democratic values is the solution. People like Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank and Dodgers owner Frank McCourt are already exploring a potential acquisition. But the fact that TikTok seems unwilling to even consider this solution tells us all we need to know about its true purpose.

Why Having a Satellite Network is So Important In 2023, the Russians were about to close a deal with a certain North Korean MLRS, but the deal fell through exactly because the North Koreans, +20 years ago, had revolted against Russian opposition to their nuclear program and switched from GLONASS to BeiDou. Only few years ago, the NK returned to Glonass and started converting their equipment to work with dual GNSS guidance. But why did the deal sour? Because the Chinese did not authorize the use of their satellites in the Ukraine conflict. The same problem occurred with the Belarusian POLONEZ MLRS, which uses missiles based on Chinese technology. Today, Iran has switched from GPS to BeiDou, aiming for greater resistance to jammers and integration with Chinese systems. This shows that a missile program is much more than the missiles themselves. It is necessary to have one's own constellation, even if it is strictly military and regionalized, with resources for monitoring and target acquisition, in addition to the ability to deal with jammers and spoofers. When I mentioned Iran and BeiDou, it is the beginning and serves as a gateway that enables integration with Chinese networks, provided the Chinese decide to allow it. However, it is essentially a massive gateway, with numerous smaller, more specialized sub-channels operating underneath. For targeting moving objects, Iran would need to receive data from the Guowang or Yaogan networks. In the last six months, the Chinese could have provided partial integration. At this stage, since the Iranians are conducting their ISR primarily with drones, I believe the Chinese are not sharing data from the LEO satellites in those networks. Iran also has its own satellites, but the Chinese network is far more mature and likely equipped with a wide array of integration and data-sharing tools. While the Chinese are providing intelligence to Iran, I believe they are prudent in doing so to preserve the relationships they have built with other Arab states. At this moment, I believe that the sharing of intelligence from satellites isn’t in real time. For a country like Iran, it is crucial to have GNSS independence with its own program. The same applies to other medium-sized countries, which need at least an LEO constellation capable of providing the minimum ISR, and this is linked to security, but also a series of other factors. I'll give a practical example here. Drones usually lose link with 50% of their range in the Amazon due to weather conditions. With an LEO constellation, this would not occur. Today, to have independence, a constellation project is necessary.
