Concorde’s moveable nose for unrestricted views during takeoff and landing

Once upon a time you could travel from New York to London in 2 hours 52 minutes. This was Concorde. Nothing replaced it.

An interesting fact about the Concorde is that it experiences thermal expansion during flight due to the immense heat generated by traveling at supersonic speeds. At Mach 2 (about twice the speed of sound), the plane's aluminum body would heat up to around 260°F (127°C), causing the aircraft to expand by up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. The cockpit panels and other parts of the plane would become noticeably warm, and flight attendants would even notice gaps that would appear in the cabin during flight and close again after landing. This expansion was carefully accounted for in the plane’s design.

Every time I see a Concorde I think of the borzoi

THIS WAS THE MOST AMAZING PLANE. I FLEW FROM MEW YORK TO LONDON IN 2 HOURS AND 40 MINUTES. NO TURBULENCE BECAUSE YOU ARE ABOVE THE ATMOSPHERE, YOU CAN SEE THE CURVE OF THE EARTH. BRING IT BACK. NOTHING LIKE IT.

I will never understand why humanity took a step back from nuclear energy and supersonic aviation. Had we moved forward at full speed, we would have way better and safer tech now.

I took the AirFrance NYC to Paris in the 80’s. It was one of a kind experience. Wish I still had the swag bag they gave you. I couldn’t even stand up on the inside of the plane. So damn fast. You sensed it. I recall seeing the curvature of the earth…
