Dreamforce brought more than 45,000 people into San Francisco, and it was a public safety success. There wasn’t a single major incident reported during the conference. Didn’t we say San Francisco was going to come back bolder and bigger than ever? On a single day, the City had back-to-back major events: live music, festivals, entertainment happening everywhere. People from San Francisco and the Bay Area are pouring into SF because they want to have FUN and enjoy the best of our City. Our bars and restaurants are packed, thanks to this surge of activity and happenings we’re rolling out Downtown and across neighborhoods. We just wrapped another successful Dreamforce week that filled our hotels and restaurants, and Salesforce announced they’re returning again next year! All of this is good for our small businesses, San Francisco’s Downtown recovery and neighborhoods. And we’re just getting started.

Crime in San Francisco this past year has seen historic declines—down nearly 30% citywide. Homicides dropped to their lowest level since 1954, car break-ins are down more than 40%, and we took more than 56 pounds of fentanyl off the streets. The momentum is real, San Franciscans are feeling the difference, and we’re going to keep going. Thank you to San Francisco Police and our city partners for their relentless work to keep our communities safe.

The future of Downtown San Francisco just got a huge boost from the Biden Administration. Thanks to advocacy from our Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, the federal government announced a new investment of $3.4 billion in the Portal, our transit center, to bring Caltrain — and eventually High Speed Rail — into the heart of our Downtown. With plans for 11 transit systems within and around the center, this investment isn’t just a commitment to the future of transportation in our city, region, and state, it’s a commitment to a thriving future for San Francisco. It’s a sign of what we can do when we work together and think big about what’s possible. The future of San Francisco and California is High Speed Rail, and the Portal in our Downtown is where that future will live.

Today, I am excited to announce our Family Opportunity Agenda. We are going to be relentless in our drive to make our city more affordable for families in San Francisco. Starting this month, a family of four making less than $230,000 a year will qualify for free child care at hundreds of high quality providers across the city. And by this fall, those earning up to $310,000 a year will receive a 50% subsidy. Our plan also expands opportunities for our students. In partnership with SFUSD, we’re launching a new pilot that allows high school students to earn associate degrees or industry certifications at City College—with a guaranteed transfer to SF State University. This will help them become nurses, police officers, Pre-K teachers, auto technicians, chefs, and more. We’re committed to making San Francisco a place where families can stay, grow, and build their future. This is just the beginning. Let’s go, San Francisco.

Today, I am proud to submit a balanced budget that is fiscally responsible and strengthens our social safety net—so even in the face of federal cuts, San Franciscans know they can count on this city. If you walk down the street in San Francisco, you will see a city that’s alive: young people in parks, tourists enjoying our restaurants, and police officers talking to small business owners while walking the beat. There’s no doubt our city is moving in the right direction—and we still have so much work left to do. When families across San Francisco sit down for dinner at night, the rising cost of rent, healthcare, food, and gas has many asking whether they can afford to stay. In a region as wealthy as this one, in a moment where the world is looking to San Francisco to define the future, we cannot leave people behind—hard-working San Franciscans who make this city the vibrant, dynamic place we all know and love. This year’s budget closes a $642 million dollar two-year deficit—moving our city forward for all San Franciscans. I presented this budget this afternoon from one of the city’s benefits centers in the Mission, where hundreds of San Franciscans come every day to access healthcare, food assistance, and employment services. This budget strengthens the work happening right here, using funding from the emergency reserve we established last year to respond to sweeping federal cuts. It also funds critical public safety improvements, protects legal services for immigrant families, continues support for LGBTQ+ residents, and invests in proven programs that help keep families housed, move young people out of homelessness, and connect people to treatment. In San Francisco, we are proving that common sense and discipline can drive a broad economic recovery. In the weeks ahead, I will partner with Board President Mandelman, Budget Chair Chan, and the entire Board of Supervisors to finalize this budget. Last year, we stabilized the city’s finances. This year, in the face of new challenges, we are continuing to stand together as San Franciscans. San Francisco is a city on the rise, and we are not leaving anyone behind.
