The power to clear Jantar Mantar was already in hand. The Prime Minister and two successive Home Ministers could have ended the Lokpal agitation through detention and force. They did not. That choice is now called weakness. It was the opposite. A government that can disperse a crowd and still leaves the square open is the reason a country continues to recognise itself as a democracy. The later habit of measuring authority by how quickly a protest is shut down will not rewrite that fact.
