Just hours after celebrations erupted in Thodupuzha projecting VD Satheesan as Chief Minister, a disturbing scene unfolded on the streets. It was not the Youth Congress leading the celebration march. It was the Muslim Youth League. And these were the slogans openly raised: “Who is this Vellappally? Who is this Sukumaran? See this clearly… this is the League… Panakkad’s League…” “The League will rule the soil of Kerala. The League will decide the laws.” “O Nair from Perunna… O Vellappally from Alappuzha… Don’t provoke us too much… This is the League…” These are not slogans of democracy or social harmony. These are open warnings directed at Hindu community leaders and the Nair and Ezhava communities that have long supported Congress.
