Just for clarification for those not aware of Welsh politics. The universal basic income he refers to was a limited pilot scheme for children leaving local authority care. It has been reported that there may have been a few of those children who were previously asylum seekers.

He's bleats on about £20000 so immigrants can challenge their asylum decision in court, he calls that a disgrace but sending 300 people to Rwanda at £1.8M each is good value. How many asylum seekers could we accommodate for the best part of half billion pound?

#bbcqt should try to impose some standards when they choose panellist. The arrogant, ill-mannered sexist bully MP Davies has been on before and his behaviour was identical. Or has the BBC sunk so low as to deliberately choose such as him as they know he’ll be like this.

Whatever one’s politics, it is clear from the loud chatter gushing out of @DavidTCDavies - as well as from his frequently interrupting others whilst feeling entitled to unlimited speaking time - is that David is an arrogant bully quite incapable of serving as an MP. #bbcqt #GTTO

🦆 i wanna say that nong is so amazing. he is getting cuter and good everyday. lately one thing i like is that he started paying attention to the little things again just like he did back when we first met. now that we are busy with work, we had less time for ourselves and people around us. but now its back, he is happy with the little things again. 🦆 recently i bought that little aquarium thing that everyone saw and he just sat there happily talking about it for 10 minutes straight. he kept saying "oh this is nice!!" and kept on talking about it all day even on the plane he would take it out and look at it. 🦆 i hope nong stays as this version because when nong is happy and people around nong see him happy then they become happy too. namping's best support system for a reason 😭🫶🏻 KNP CORRECT TO CONQUER #BEAUTILABxKENGNAMPING

He’s held a number of roles. He’s been an MP before. He actually has more experience of governing than many of us did when we entered government for the very first time as ministers in 2024.” Unlike Andy Burnham, who has real Cabinet and parliamentary experience, neither Starmer nor McSweeney had ever held office while Labour were in power. Starmer then sacked Sue Gray, the one senior figure who actually knew how government worked and their attempt to rule with iron fist failed spectacularly. The inexperience at the top has been glaring.

We can’t say we’re shocked that Andy Burnham has sacked Bridget Phillipson as Education Secretary. One of her first acts as Secretary of State was to torpedo the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA) — arguably the most consequential piece of free speech legislation in the past 15 years. She reversed the commencement orders that would have brought the Act’s most important provisions into force, including the vital complaints scheme. Rather than asking Parliament to do so, she bypassed it through ministerial fiat. The Free Speech Union challenged this in the High Court on two grounds: first, that it breached the sacrosanct constitutional principle that a minister cannot defy the will of Parliament; and second, that she had failed to carry out an adequate impact assessment. Days before the case was due to be heard, Bridget Phillipson partially U-turned, announcing that she would commence most of the key provisions — and she duly did. We then became embroiled in a long-standing dispute over who had won the case. That mattered because it determined who would pay the legal costs. The High Court decided that the Free Speech Union had won and ordered the Government to pay our costs. Importantly, when Phillipson announced her partial U-turn, the Free Speech Union offered to settle if the Government paid £80,000 — around a quarter of our total legal costs. Pretty fair, no? Well, the Government refused. The Free Speech Union believes this was because Phillipson did not want to admit she had reversed course. The High Court has now ordered the Government to pay all of our costs. Bridget Phillipson’s hubris has cost taxpayers around £200,000. Combined with the Government’s own legal costs, the total bill exceeds £500,000. That also means we now have the resources to challenge Phillipson’s successor, Lucy Powell, should she attempt to reverse any of the commencement orders that bring HEFSA into force — including the much-needed complaints scheme for academics, university staff and visiting speakers, which is due to come into force on 1 September. Creative workshops can be destructive because you get too much feedback. It's all over the place. The people giving you advice don't actually know you. Ocean Vuong says that in his workshops, people aren't allowed to critique other writers for the first few weeks. He says: "When you suspend critique, people are more willing to let the novelty of themselves come into the room. So we just put things in the center. When we look at a poem or short story, we simply talk about what we notice. And then once we know each other's tendencies, we can gear our feedback towards others." The importance of knowing someone before we give them feedback is obvious in other parts of life. For example, you would never walk up to a stranger on the street and instantly give them fashion advice. But that's exactly what we do in creative workshops.

It’s good news that Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has today announced she will finally implement the complaints scheme promised under the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA). This has been a long time coming and is the result of a sustained campaign to protect free speech on campus. Upon taking office, Bridget Phillipson paused HEFSA’s implementation, including the complaints scheme. After we brought legal proceedings, she U-turned and committed to delivering it. She has kept her word on that, and we thank her. At the Free Speech Union, around 8% of the 5,700+ cases we’ve handled over the past six years have involved universities failing to protect free speech and academic freedom. From April next year, the new scheme will allow academics, university staff and visiting speakers to take complaints directly to the Office for Students (OfS), free of charge, rather than pursuing costly legal action. Universities that fail to uphold free speech could face fines of over £500,000 or 2% of their income. But while this is good news, it’s not great news. Under the new scheme, students will not be able to bring complaints. Instead, they must go to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator or pursue expensive legal action themselves. Students should have access to this scheme, and we will continue to campaign for that right. There is also a wider issue: because HEFSA applies only in England, the scheme will not be available to those at universities across the rest of the UK. Two summers ago, Kara Lawson was speaking to her Duke basketball team. She wanted them to shift their mindset. What followed was 2+ minutes of gold on how to be successful. Here’s Lawson on embracing hard things: “We all wait in life for things to get easier. Think in your own life. I just gotta get through this, and then it'll be easy … It's what we do. We wait for stuff to get easier. “It will never get easier. What happens is you handle hard better. “Most people think life is gonna get easier. Basketball is gonna get easier. School is gonna get easier. It never gets easier. What happens is you become someone that handles hard stuff better. “That's a mental shift that has to occur and each of your brains. If you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it's never going to happen. And then what happens? Oh, it's so hard. Oh, I can't do it. When is it going to be easy for me? Oh, it's easy for other people. “It's not. It's hard. And the second we see you handling hard better, what are we gonna do? We're gonna make it harder. Because we're preparing you for when you leave here. Not just basketball – in life. “And if you think life when you leave college is going to all of a sudden get easy because you graduated and you got a degree, it's not going to get easier. It's going to get harder. “Make yourself a person that handles hard well, not someone that's waiting for the easy. Because if you have a meaningful pursuit in life, it will never be easy. What satisfies you in the short-term robs you in the long run. 7. Have you ever heard someone tell a story about how easy a great achievement was? 8. “Easy choices hard life, hard choices easy life” misses the point. We shouldn’t seek an easy life to begin with. 9.
