Constantinople, now known as Istanbul, was the capital of the Ottoman Empire in 1905. In 1905, Constantinople was the vibrant heart of the Ottoman Empire, which was one of the most powerful states in the world during its peak. The city was a bustling metropolis where East met West, serving as a crucial bridge between Europe and Asia. The city was renowned for its magnificent architectural structures. One of the most famous is the Hagia Sophia, a grand cathedral turned mosque turned museum, which showcases the city's layered history. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque for its stunning blue tiles, is another architectural marvel from this period. Constantinople was a cosmopolitan city with a rich mix of different ethnicities and religions, including Muslims, Christians, and Jews. This multicultural environment greatly contributed to the city's vibrant culture and arts. The Constantinople Tramway Network began operation in 1869 and was expanding around 1905. It was an important part of the city's public transportation system and served both the European and Asian sides of the city. The early 1900s was a period of significant change for the Ottoman Empire. It was the beginning of the end for the empire, which would collapse a little more than a decade later after World War I. The city of Constantinople was then renamed Istanbul when Turkey became a republic in 1923.
