Massachusetts voters did not ask for a negotiated audit, a limited review, or for the Legislature to define its own terms. The people approved an independent audit of the Legislature. Now, the response from Beacon Hill is a bill that: • Narrows the scope of what can be examined • Allows the Legislature to decide what records will be provided • Prevents courts from stepping in when disputes arise Who has ever heard of an independent audit where the entity being audited gets to decide what can be investigated? At the same time, lawmakers are presenting this as a “transparency package.” But even they acknowledge that many of the “new” public records provisions simply codify documents that are already available today. So what is actually changing? The audit. And that is exactly where the restrictions are being added. As Auditor Diana DiZoglio warns in this clip, this is not an expansion of transparency. It is a restructuring of a voter mandate into something Beacon Hill can define, limit, and control. For the people of our state, the core question is straightforward: Should the Legislature be able to redefine a law that 72% of voters already passed when it becomes inconvenient?

Of the pit toilets identified in the SAFE Initiative's 2018 audit, as of 31 March 2025, we have eradicated 96%. This is significant progress from 7 years ago when Government identified nearly 3372 schools across the country which relied on these dangerous structures. Today, we have 141 of those identified toilets left. 90 of these are in construction phases and should be completed between this month and June - taking it to 98% completion. This is an achievement of scale, but it is not a victory. While we are at the tail end of the 2018 audit - we need initiate a new audit which will make sure whatever was missed and built after the audit is identified and eradicated. We won’t stop. We can’t stop. Safe sanitation and dignity for our learners and teachers.

I’ve been calling for an audit of Indigenous funding for years. When billions of taxpayer dollars are being spent and the outcomes on the ground are still falling short, Australians have every right to ask where the money is going and what it is delivering. It was great to have Angus Taylor MP on the ground in Alice Springs to see these challenges firsthand and renew the call for greater transparency and accountability. The spending black hole must end. Accountability must begin.
