By delving into the limits of mathematical computability, he argues that while computers are masters of "computational mathematics," true intelligence requires a conscious understanding that exists beyond any algorithm. AI progress is outpacing our ability to control it… because control ISN’T keeping up with capability. One of the people raising that concern is Yoshua Bengio. He’s one of the founding figures of artificial intelligence, a Turing Award winner, and one of the most-cited scientists in the world. His work helped lay the foundations for the deep-learning systems now powering today’s AI boom. AI is moving fast (faster than regulation and public understanding). What worries Yoshua isn’t progress itself. It’s how quickly powerful systems are being deployed without a clear way to align them with human values, or to control what happens when they behave in unexpected ways.

Honor is building the first phone that also includes an AI robot. It's a robot in the sense that the pop-up camera acts as the AI's eyes, and if I understand correctly, it allows a continuously active AI companion to work as an assistant. Interesting, but probably more of a gimmick. However, personal AI companions are coming.

Is compute scarcity masking the real economics of AI? interesting point from Peter Fenton: open-weight models are still complex to run well. For now, the big labs have the bundle: model + compute + reliability + access... and thus pricing power. But if compute supply loosens and open model tooling gets easier, routine AI work can more easily move to cheaper/open models.

Physical AI models should be capable of benchmark tasks like this one. It's interesting for the all the reasons Rhoda AI calls out -- requires visual memory, and the model must track the cups from the very start, at high frame rates. Interestingly, GEN-1 appears to exhibit a degree of "active perception." It's subtle; the hands can sometimes appear to "follow" the cups, using its own movements to help attend to where it thinks the object should be. With the launch of GLM 5.2 this week, I see everyone asking "have open models caught up to closed models?" The more interesting question that's getting missed: what can you do with an open model that you can't do with a closed one? You can specialize them. And when you do, the number of economically valuable tasks open models can do actually subsumes that of closed models. Charlie O'Neill explaining this:
