.Naval: Epistemology, which is a fancy word for the theory of how knowledge grows or how knowledge growth occurs. And we've all been told since we're young that there's a scientific method and that scientists sort of do this stuff in white lab coats and we're supposed to accept it because of this thing called the scientific method. And then they give us true beliefs that we can then say, well the science is settled and we take that we move on. And we all only have a very, very vague understanding of how this works. And people say, well maybe you go out in the real world, you look at what's happening, you make all these observations, and then based on that you form a theory, you test the theory against more observations, and the more observations you get the closer you get to the truth. And once you have enough observation it's true and then you call it a scientific theory or a law and it's settled and you move on. And this is the popular conception of how science works. And as Popper pointed out and as you take even further, this is completely wrong. And so I'd love for you to get into that, which is what is knowledge? How does it grow? What is the real scientific method? And how do we figure things out? David Deutsch: I love the way you just stated the prevailing view there and laced every aspect of it with the contempt that it deserves. So you just went through touching every base. It's amazing that this series of misconceptions is still common sense. I mean, that it was common sense at a time when we didn't really have science or when science was just starting up, when the main issue in science was freeing itself from dogmatism, freeing itself from religion, freeing itself from authority, and so on. There it was understandable that people would look for an alternative source of authority and they would think, oh, it's sense impressions. We can see the world and you know, these religious people, they can't even see God and so on. And so we are confined to what we can see. That's where we get our ideas from. And as you say, that is completely false. Sense impressions, like all observation, even the most careful scientific observation is all theory laden. And theories are inherently fallible. I mean, we actually want to replace our best theories. Everybody who does a PhD is technically anyway, working to overturn something in the existing body of knowledge. You're not turned away at the door if you say, I don't believe this stuff, I'm going to produce something better. Whereas for most of human history, that was exactly what you were forbidden to do. The idea was that we already had all the important knowledge. If you want to discover something new, what you had to make sure of was that it didn't contradict the existing knowledge. Now, you have to make sure that it does contradict existing knowledge. So more or less. Naval: Yeah, it's this tradition of criticism that you've talked about in the West, that the Enlightenment really ushered in the Enlightenment era. David Deutsch: It has been institutionalized. So in many ways, our institutions are wiser than we are. So the institutions of science, for instance, have this built in, even if scientists actually don't always act that way. In fact, they often don't act that way, and act in a dogmatic way and try to preserve the status quo and are resistant to new ideas and so on. But the institutions, the way the procedures of science work, makes the right thing happen in the end anyway, regardless of what the people are trying to do. Naval: So you're saying the knowledge of the true scientific method is embedded in the institutions of science in the PhD process? David Deutsch: Well, the best scientific method that we know of, and one shouldn't really think of it as a method, you know, there's this wonderful lecture by Popper when he first was made a professor at the London School of Economics. He was made a professor of scientific method, and his first six lectures, I wish the rest of them were, the first six lectures are on the internet somewhere. Qullamaggie on the Importance of Leading Stocks “And like people post setups all the time on my stream. People post setups all the time, and this is the hard part — identifying a really good setup versus something that’s random and mediocre. Because that’s gonna also reflect on your results. If you trade the random setups, your results are gonna be random too. You want to find the outlier stocks. You want to see if it has relative strength. The best time to trade this breakout method is after a pullback in the markets. You want to see the stocks that held up the most — the ones that had big moves previously and held up the most. And if you master this setup, if you trade this setup coming out of a small correction, like say a 5-10 or 15% correction in the overall indices, that’s almost like free money for this type of setup. Because if you can identify the stocks that held up the most during the correction — that maybe went down initially but then stopped going down as the correction went on, and actually started building higher lows — that’s telling you something. If you have a stock that’s gone up a lot, and then it stops going down when the market goes down, you know the stock is trying to tell you something. And that’s what leading stocks do. Like every bull market, this is obviously the case. I’m gonna talk more about it later. You obviously need an up-trending or sideways market to trade this method. You have leading stocks — the stocks that go up the most and are the most liquid. And those are really the stocks you want to trade. They’re mostly mid and large caps, but even a small cap can be a leading stock. Those are really the stocks that don’t go down when the market goes down. It’s like you try to push a tennis ball underwater — it just pops back up. And those are the type of stocks you want to find when trading this method.”

Alan Watts on why trying harder is often the worst thing you can do. Alan Watts identified a pattern that runs through the heart of Daoist and Zen philosophy, one he called the backwards law. The idea is simple and deeply counterintuitive: "When you would be strong, very often the best course is to be weak. When you would be powerful, the best course is often to withdraw." Most of us are conditioned to believe that the path to any outcome is direct effort. Want connection? Pursue it. Want strength? Force it. Want happiness? Chase it. But Watts argues that many of the things we most want in life are precisely the things we repel through our pursuit of them. He uses solitude as the clearest illustration of this paradox: "It's when you learn to love solitude that, paradoxically as it may seem, you are better able to get on with others." The person who needs company who cannot sit alone, who craves connection and hunts for it is often the most difficult to be around. Their need fills the room. It creates pressure. But the person who is genuinely comfortable with themselves? That ease is magnetic. They don't demand anything from the interaction. And so the connection forms naturally. With the renewed interest in 9/11, there are a lot of people new to the demolition theory. People often don't realize a lot of things about Building 7, which collapsed from fires hours after the North Tower (WTC1) dropped tons of burning debris against its south side. This is the view from the north, composited with a later street scene shot from the same camera but at a wider angle, for scale. You don't see that damage on the south side, but you see other things. First, notice how tall the building is. The cropped version of this video makes it look like a squat and solid box. But in reality, it was relatively tall and slender. Then, notice the penthouse, on the left, full of heavy equipment, and directly over the column with the longest span bracing supports. The column that is most vulnerable to losing those supports is the one that is most vulnerable to thermal expansion. The supporting girders get longer from the heat, which breaks the connections at the ends. The longer the support, the larger the expansion. Popular videos often start later, so you don't see this hundreds-of-ton penthouse fall all the way through the building, gutting the east (left) side. The Penthouse fell exactly as it would if column 79 had failed near the bottom, which simulations show is most likely. Then notice you can see the sky through the windows on the top left. The building has been hollowed out, and the collapse is progressing to the right. We see the parapet on the right start to fall. Then the whole building collapses. We don't see what caused this, but the building was fast becoming an empty tube with no internal bracing. The exterior was "moment resisting," so it held together like a sheet, but it buckled at the base. Once one column goes, the load is instantly transferred to others, and the collapse zips around the building. A buckled column is still steel, still gives tons of support. But the mass above it needs HUNDREDS of tons, so initially the fall is 99% of freefall, indistinguishable on this low resolution video. It falls in the direction of gravity, but the most damaged columns are in the south, so it tips a bit in that direction.

This is the view from the north, composited with a later street scene shot from the same camera but at a wider angle, for scale. You don't see that damage on the south side, but you see other things. First, notice how tall the building is. The cropped version of this video makes it look like a squat and solid box. But in reality, it was relatively tall and slender. Then, notice the penthouse, on the left, full of heavy equipment, and directly over the column with the longest span bracing supports. The column that is most vulnerable to losing those supports is the one that is most vulnerable to thermal expansion. The supporting girders get longer from the heat, which breaks the connections at the ends. The longer the support, the larger the expansion. Popular videos often start later, so you don't see this hundreds-of-ton penthouse fall all the way through the building, gutting the east (left) side. The Penthouse fell exactly as it would if column 79 had failed near the bottom, which simulations show is most likely. Then notice you can see the sky through the windows on the top left. The building has been hollowed out, and the collapse is progressing to the right. We see the parapet on the right start to fall. Then the whole building collapses. We don't see what caused this, but the building was fast becoming an empty tube with no internal bracing. The exterior was "moment resisting," so it held together like a sheet, but it buckled at the base. Once one column goes, the load is instantly transferred to others, and the collapse zips around the building. A buckled column is still steel, still gives tons of support. But the mass above it needs HUNDREDS of tons, so initially the fall is 99% of freefall, indistinguishable on this low resolution video. It falls in the direction of gravity, but the most damaged columns are in the south, so it tips a bit in that direction.

Day 33 of vibe coding a game+engine using Cursor So I approached character animation from a different perspective this time. Instead of 3D -> 2D I went for native 2D via image to video method. This gives us much richer animations that the limited ones we get with 3D! Eliza is really cute with these! The downside is the time it takes to get them all done, even with Cursor skills/automation. Which ones did you like more? Check the previous posts for the 3D ones!

KIDS: When you lose the puck, how hard are you willing to work to get it back? As a coach, I want you to make plays. I want you to be creative. I want you to play with no fear of making mistakes. The only stipulation I have is that when you try to make a play and you turn it over, you have to work like hell to get it back. Here's a great example from a team that MAKES A LOT OF PLAYS. Tampa turns it over in the Ozone and then watch the effort from the players to get it back. Hounds. They create another turnover and then get rewarded in transition. Coaches, amazing clip to show your teams!!
