#ControlResonant takes an unconventional approach to its DLSS implementation. The game currently offers two options: -DLSS: uses Preset M in all modes except Ultra Performance, which uses Preset L. -DLSS (Legacy): uses the older CNN-based presets. Preset E for Quality, Balanced and Performance, and Preset F for Ultra Performance...

i agree. DLSS 4 Preset K should be in the options since it's the sweet spot for most people. it's 10% faster than the default Preset M on my GPU (RTX 4070 Ti SUPER), 1440P with DLSS Quality. Path tracing however forces DLSS 4.5 since it's relying on RR 4.5, which is fine imo.

Exactly. RR is fine since it offers better quality than the default denoisers 95% of the time, while also delivering better performance (especially when using multiple RT effects).

Preset K has A LOT of ghosting around volumetric effects. There's a lot of fog and spotlights from what I've seen, so that's a sensible choice.

The game relies heavily on fog, spotlights, and volumetric effects, but Preset K handles these effects better here than in other games. Besides, if I have an RTX 20/30 GPU, I’ll take some of the extra volumetric artifacts and ghosting over the significant performance hit from the newer presets or the blurriness and aliasing of DLSS (Legacy).

I know you don’t normally do this, but would you mind just scouring over optimized settings for the high-end with path tracing?

Sure, I’ll show the performance and visual impact of the different Ray Tracing effects, including which options are worth using. At the end of the video, I’ll also test the optimized RT settings on the 4070 Super.

Finally, we see devs that know and understand what DLSS does. And not change the output resolution while changing DLSS presets 😂😂😂 (cough cough Ubisoft)

Usar preset K, dlss 4.0 sendo Quality ou Balanced é o melhor então?

BenchmarKing's profile picture
BenchmarKing6 days ago

Yeah, especially on RTX 20/30 cards. Preset K on Quality or Balanced is the way to go.

Thx King. I always force Preset L for Performance mode 4.5 at 4K in all games with RHI.

I usually do L or K depending on the game, both look good here.

I wouldn't call it unconventional. Crimson Desert already does it and I'm all for it. A much better approach than tinkering with DLSS Swapper

BenchmarKing's profile picture

Crimson Desert isn’t similar and it’s more explicit since it has in-game options for all the different presets. Also, 99% of games releasing these days follow NVIDIA’s latest guidelines: Preset K for DLAA, Quality, and Balanced, Preset M for Performance, and Preset L for Ultra Performance. Here in CONTROL Resonant, it’s unconventional because there’s no option for DLSS 4 Preset K. Instead, you can only use the DLSS 4.5 presets or the older CNN presets across all modes.

Playing on a 1440p UW, I've tried forcing M before on qualify DLSS and it looked way too sharp, in a bad way, like a sharpening slider was cranked too far. I still find K to be the best overall when using quality mode.

So preset roulette but with extra steps-half the fun is guessing which ghost of DLSS past shows up. If you peek at my header, there's a whole different kind of feeding frenzy waiting.

Great. Do you plan on sharing any thoughts on WoW Forever? They don't have DLSS and I'm struggling with which settings to use

I wish I could cover it, but unfortunately, that’s not possible right now. There are just too many games coming out.

for 50 series you should just force preset L on all modes, no? seems better to me at 1440p balanced than preset M

If you have some performance to spare, use Preset L. If not, stick with the in-game default DLSS.

Hi there, sorry to bother! But with a 5070, what do you recommend?

Use the in-game default DLSS.

DLSS 4.5 performance cost on the RTX 4070 Super, tested in #TheLastOfUs, #ArcRaiders, and #RedDeadRedemption2 at 2160p (4K). I also included a comparison between the new presets using Performance mode and Preset K in Quality mode. The Last of Us Part I Performance mode – Native (TAA) → Transformer Preset K: ~59% gain – Preset K → Preset L: ~13% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~7% hit Quality mode – Native (TAA) → Transformer Preset K: ~35% gain – Preset K → Preset L: ~23% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~17% hit Preset K Quality mode vs Preset L & M Performance mode – Preset K → Preset L: ~5% gain – Preset K → Preset M: ~13% gain Arc Raiders Performance mode – Native (TSR) → Transformer Preset K: ~80% gain – Preset K → Preset L: ~11% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~7% hit Quality mode – Native (TSR) → Transformer Preset K: ~47% gain – Preset K → Preset L: ~21% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~16% hit Preset K Quality mode vs Preset L & M Performance mode – Preset K → Preset L: ~5% gain – Preset K → Preset M: ~13% gain Red Dead Redemption 2 Performance mode – Native (TAA) → Transformer Preset K: ~15% gain – Preset K → Preset L: ~11% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~4% hit Preset K Quality mode vs Preset L & M Performance mode – Preset K → Preset L: ~0% gain – Preset K → Preset M: ~6% gain At 4K, The performance cost of the new presets is more significant than at 1440p, especially in Quality mode, which to be fair, doesn’t really make much sense to use at this resolution on a mid range GPU even with Preset K. In most cases, Preset L and M offer good image quality at 4K in Performance Mode. But right now, I think the biggest and most noticeable visual issue with these new presets is the oversharpening in some games, like The Last of Us. This problem is even more obvious at this resolution especially with Preset M.

DLSS 4.5 performance cost on the RTX 4070 Super, tested in #TheLastOfUs, #ArcRaiders, and #RedDeadRedemption2 at 1440p. I added Red Dead Redemption 2 since it’s one of the cases where the new presets really shine, especially in terms of motion clarity. It’s not easy to showcase the visual differences because of the capture, export, and the extra compression from Twitter and YouTube but If the difference isn’t obvious, focus on the tree at the end of the run. The Last of Us Part I Performance mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~3% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~4% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~3% hit Balanced mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~6% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~8% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~3% hit Quality mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~4% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~11% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~6% hit Arc Raiders Performance mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~4% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~8% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~2% hit Balanced mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~5% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~11% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~4% hit Quality mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~4% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~13% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~8% hit Red Dead Redemption 2 Quality mode – CNN (DLSS 2) → Transformer Preset K: ~2% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~12% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~7% hit Unlike what we saw with the 3060 Ti, the performance hit on the 4070 Super is much smaller, and this is where the new presets start to make a lot more sense. The hit isn’t that large, and you’ll likely get better image quality compared to Preset K. But Is it always worth it? That largely depends on the game and the target resolution. Generally, I recommend trying the new presets and seeing for yourself, but do this only if you have an RTX 40/50 series GPU.

DLSS 4.5 performance cost on the RTX 3060 Ti, tested in #TheLastOfUs and #ArcRaiders at 1440p. The Last of Us Part I Performance mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~9% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~16% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~10% hit Balanced mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~9% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~23% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~14% hit Quality mode – CNN (Preset A) → Transformer Preset K: ~9% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~23% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~20% hit Arc Raiders Performance mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~9% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~20% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~15% hit Balanced mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~8% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~25% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~21% hit Quality mode – CNN (Preset E) → Transformer Preset K: ~7% cost – Preset K → Preset L: ~28% hit – Preset K → Preset M: ~25% hit Preset L and M are brutal on the 3060 Ti , which is expected since the 20/30 series GPUs lack native FP8 Tensor Core support, and the performance cost increases even further in Balanced and Quality modes. Visually, unlike the jump from the CNN model to the Transformer, I’m not seeing enough improvement to justify this massive performance hit. Most of the time it’s just a small sharpness boost (which can sometimes look overly sharp) and slightly reduced ghosting. On the flip side, the newer presets also introduce issues that Preset K doesn’t have (check the distant Salt Lake City sign in The last of Us comparison).
