The biggest issue the river faces is illegal sewage connections that dump untreated waste. Until that is tackled, the river's ecosystem cannot replenish itself. Metrowater and WRD keep talking about interceptor drains and riverside STPs but they're not doing it fast enough.

We cannot clean like this. Cleaning should start from the source. We should do sewage treatment in all tributaries. Residents should avoid illegal sewage connection to SWD. Industries should not dump their drain to tributaries. Then one flood will clean the river automatically.

Coovam's problem is the existence of Madras harbour. How many of you even know that marina beach didn't exist before the harbour was built? Harbour actively stops the eb and flow of tide into coovam by building sand at the river mouth, a stagnant river is a dead river.
